JMoney got it right, If that were happening to my son or daughter, the "City Kids" all would have left in bodybags. I live in Canfield but grew up in A-Town. This kind of confrontation has been going on for decades. The Wedgewood Rats would regularly brawl with Chaney, etc. The only difference was that back then it would be 14 against 14. This action of 14 against 1 can ONLY be considered THUG mentality. I believe the father showed great restraint. They would not have been so fortunate if it were my PROPERTY and FAMILY they attacked.
I am not a union member, but need to correct some of the comments made to this article. The current finacial crisis in the American auto industry was not caused by poor quality or inferior products, bad product mix, or failure to predict the market fluctuations. The LOAN that was secured from the biased government was due to the lack of funding or borrowing power caused by the banking industry collapse. Money is lent and returned to ALL major corporations on a regular basis. When you have to pay for components for any product when you purchase them, and the return on your product is 90 days away, you have to bridge that obligation. There are very few corporations that do not have a line of credit. When you can't borrow money, what do you do? The article above clearifies that the "union" wage paid by the American Manufacturers is not out of line to the industry average. The reason for that is that these type of jobs are extremely dangerous. The reality is that most assignments, if not carried out correctly can result in death. Toyota built a plant in San Antonio Texas that was scheduled to build 274K Tundras a year. It produced (sold) 80K by August then was shuttered because of lack of demand. Ask yourself, would anybody build a product that did not have a demand for the vehicle? NOBODY predicted this mess, did you? The current belt tightening is affecting everyone, not just the auto industry. Unfortunately though, in this town there has always been an underlying hatred for GM workers. I've said it before and I'll say it again, with several thousand employees, Lordstown is a direct reflection of our town and society itself. If anybody thinks that complex operates without some of the most intelligent minds in the country working there, that person would be a fool. To LLoyd, the concessions are coming at an alarming rate. Degreed folks with over 10 years of service are and have been "seperated from the company". Rest assured, the pain is and will be felt. To babs68, I spent 6 years in the deep south at one of our plants. I am very painfully aware that the South is still fighting the war of northern aggression and have absolutely no loyalty to anything associated with Yankee industry. But I wonder if you ever heard the quote from Carlos Gohn, the CEO of Nissan when questioned about the poor quality of the Nissan Titan pickup produce in Mississippi. He said " Quality has been an issue because we hired ignorant southern farmers to build our truck". Perception is an uneducated guess. Quality is perception. Style, power, and fuel economy are quantified measures. Prior to commenting on the perceived quality gap between the American manufacturers and the foreign brands, I would ask that you visit J.D. Power and the other industry analysts to help you in your opnions. Don't make decisions based on your contempt and hate for your idiot relative that happens to work for GM. Chances are, you'd hate him no matter where he worked.
No offense to anyone in Atown, I grew up there myself, graduating from Fitch. If you look around though, you must admit that the housing market in Atown is ripe for lower income, less educated, less motivated tenants. The neigborhood where I grew up had families that were content to live within 1200 sq ft. All hard working families that produced doctors and lawyers and yes, even autoworkers and mechanics. But today unless these homes are starter homes, they are not the dream homes they once were. Thus the sec 8 and rental property opportunities. The individual that was charged with the home invasion on Meridian road was living in a sec 8 rental house on Burkey that once was home to a family of six. If you aren't convinced that blight is (has) moving towards Atown, just take a ride around the west side. What once were solid, well kept steelworker homes that were as neat as a pin now resemble the worst sections of the south side. Sorry, it is not your fault, but it already is here and it can't be stopped.
To OldManGrump and everyone else that comments in regard to the $70 an hour wage for American autoworkers, please go to the above so that your facts are correct. OldManGrump, as a passive reader of the comments page, I have always found your opinions insightfull and sensible (must have some Slovak in you), but this time I find that you are piling on a little bit with the other posters that obviously are writing with biased opinion instead of fact.
To all, The elderly woman in this article is my mother. She was brutally attacked in her home while asleep on her couch. My family and I need ALL of your help to bring this coward to justice. We will not stop until this piece of garbage has been captured. Please help us. Call the Austintown or Youngstown police with any and all information. From my entire family, and all of our friends, we thank you.
