And how do you know that they didn't try to call his office? You really should have some facts in front of you before you speculate on the Judiciary and in so many words saying the judge is being political. As a courtesy, his office should have called the court to let them know Doug Taylor was going to cover for him (which his office didn't and this can be gleaned from the facts). Then, when Mr. Taylor didn't show up, they could have called him. However, it is ultimately up to the attorney to make sure the hearing is covered and for someone to show - not for the court to call and search for the attorney.

Unfortunately, it is not as simple as black and white. The jury in Bennie Adams (and yes there was an African-American juror) had to weigh the aggravating factors against the mitigating factors. And in his case, they found that the aggravating factors outweighed the mitigating factors. The jury had to do the same thing in the Davis trial. And they found the opposite. Age, mental ability, and other factors come into play in the mitigation process. You need to sit on one of these juries to see how difficult it is to recommend death - but the law is the law. If you want real change, you need to talk to your legislator to outlaw the death penalty.
