Ex-CEO of Cleveland schools works on Chaney plan

I hope the proposed STEM program at Chaney will lead to improvements throughout the Youngstown school system. I think as a society we need to focus on parenting skills and support for young parents if we really want to improve the education system. Too many parents & children are being left behind because they lack life skills. Parents cannot give children what they as parents do not possess & teachers cannot success if parents are not an integral part of the process.

Youngstown a good place to raise a family, Forbes says

Note to those who have never lived anywhere else- Youngstown area is not the armpit of the world. We have great amenities, excellent health care facilities, great restaurants, cultural activities and it is affordable to raise a family here. Traffic is miniscule. Please try and expand your worldview to include something beyond navel gazing.

Grandmother files complaint against Youngstown police

How would anyone reading the story want to be treated in this situation? AN apology was warranted and was not given. The very young children were witness to their grandmother handcuffed and detained for no reason. The victim was restrained and denied medical attention. Not a good way to build a trust relationship with law abiding members of the community.

Grants would beautify Girard-Youngstown corridor

This would be a good thing in my opinion. I refused to buy a home in Girard because I didn't want to have to travel through the ugly area between Girard & Y-town on 422. This was before the work on the 711 connector was done. I think the area targeted is one of the worst looking in the area. The No. 1 area for ugly is the Warren steel mill (main st.) but that area does not have the traffic volume of the 422 corridor between Girard & Y-town.

What has Liberty ‘Learn’ed?

Heads up about Open Enrollment Students!
Each open enrollment student BRINGS $5,700 of funds with them to the district. The money follows the student. These students are probably bringing in MORE money than a Liberty resident student does to the district through the taxes paid by levies, especially if a levy has not been passed since 1995. The district can cherry pick students from Youngstown and take the ones who dont need extra services (special education).

Austintown School District GENERATES $570,000 in extra income per 100 open enrollment students. This is how we stay in the black without having to go back to the voters for a NEW levy. Our last new levy was in 1996.

Liberty residents, get educated and demand more form your BoE and district.

My question to the State of Ohio is: How can one person (not a BoE) sign for a $100,00 loan that the district is on the hook to pay? Per Vindy article, the treasurer signed on for a loan that was supposed to be used to upgrade buildings to make them more energy efficient and then used that money to keep up the appearance that the state was reimbursing the district for expenses related to the Lead & Learn school. That policy needs to change if it is what really happened.

Advocates tout new Ohio special-needs scholarship

Isn't this just a boondoggle to "pay" charter schools to take special needs students? Public schools (tax payers) are OBLIGATED to provide a free and appropriate education to all students. So if it cost more money to provide for a special needs student in the district it is tough cookies for that district.

Charter & private schools do not take special needs students because those children don't generate revenue under profit model that these corporations operate. Charter schools are for profit entities. It is about the all mighty dollar, not the education.

Isn't that "nice" for the Repubs to provide some profit incentive to charter schools to educate special needs students!

Name change for Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport?

SO how much is it going to cost to change the name? It would help to know the specifics. Is it a few thousand dollars or $20,000?

Santorum: Trim Social Security now even if painful

Santorum is the same clown who would call Social Security an "entitlement program " while squealing for ANY cuts to military spending.

My spouse and I have been paying into SS since we were 19 yrs old and I don't believe anything I am forced to participate in can be called an "entitlement program".

Just for fun, google spreading santorum and keep this website in the top five choices when santorum's name is googled!

Dems sue Kasich over new district boundaries

Ohio needs a nonpartisan redistricting panel to draw these districts every ten years. The reason we have so much political gridlock in Washington is because there are too many "safe" districts. The political parties try to strengthen their advantages in each district and this causes the elections to be noncompetitive.

A "safe" district causes the politician running in that district to have to appeal to the most highly partisan ideas of the polital party. We end up sending the most idiological politicians to Washington & State governments because they have to be partisan in order to get elected in those districts.

Make all the districts competative ans send the politicians who can appeal to the middle of the electorate. This political gridlock is not helping anyone.
