Actually, the homicide rate is way down from its high in the 1990s. In 1995 there were 56 murders. There were 23 in 2009 and only 20 last year.
Teaching is a profession that garners very little respect in America. Nor is teaching a well compensated job. We've made teaching an unattractive alternative for intelligent and accomplished people, so it's no wonder few want to teach.
It's very telling that kwanzaa is attacked while other highly questionable holidays are left alone: Thansksgiving-the honoring of Pilgrims who started the Indian genocide; Columbus Day-The honoring of a mass murderer; etc.
Youngstown is a majority-minority city. You don't think we need attention to diversity here?
The majority of children under 18 in America are now non-white. We have more and more young kids who are coming out to proclaim their homosexuality. America is more diverse than its ever been; yet, you want to shut down any real conversation about it.
Only since the 1970s Stan. Don't you remember when whites fire bombed black houses in Liberty and in Boardman in the late 1960s?
Have you ever heard of "racial steering"? It still exists.
Weren't whites the original separatists?
Refresh my memory. Was it whites or blacks that initiated Jim Crow and racial segregation? Why did local whites work hard to keep the suburbs here so lily white?
Ahhh yes, the rank racism of the Vindy comment boards. Yes, inclusiveness should be genuine, but it rarely is in America or the Mahoning Valley.
Stan,
Yep. The same America that enslaved blacks from its inception?
The same America that forced blacks into segregated Jim Crow conditions?
The same America that shows a white Jesus and a white Santa Claus every year?
The same America that has a million black men in its jails?
Your insinuation was pretty clear; east high has been majority African American for sometime. The vast majority of men going to jail in Youngstown (a result of the so-called "drug war") are African American, which also leads me to your coded mentioning of race. Just because you don't come out and scream race doesn't mean people won't pick up on it.
formerytown,
There's no evidence that Jesus was born on December 25th; hence, the holiday was arbitrarily set and is man made.
Second, Ernie doesn't have to answer for anyone in his class. After all, whites rely on foreigners (Arabs, Indians, Africans, etc.) to fill science and engineering jobs that their kids don't have the skills to fulfill.
Lastly, all people in the Mahoning Valley and America should be celebrating the success and mourning over the failures in the African American community. Why? because they are Americans. We are all Americans.
