This is ridiculous! School is canceled for basketball? Is our society really this messed up? This says that basketball is more important than education and clearly gives the students the wrong impression about priorities. No wonder our kids are trailing those of other countries when it comes to education... It's because they're taught that a basketball game is more important! The people of Warren should be outraged at the lesson they're children are being taught here.
Also, the principal or school superintendent should resign. Don't get me wrong, the school and students should be proud of their team but by canceling school the wrong message is being sent. Are these the priorities that should be shown to high school kids?
Wow this is news! I must admit that I am happily shocked to hear that amidst all of his blogging & facebooking, Rep. Ryan actually introduced something that will help the valley.
Kudos Mr. Ryan, even if it doesn't pass I'm glad you finally did something for Youngstown. Let's just hope it doesn't take 6 more years for your next accomplishment...
Do I root for Pavlik because he's white? No. I root for him because he's from Youngstown you tool. Your point of white guys being related to bad news lately is pretty dumb. Anyone with a brain can counter your logic here:
1) CEOs of the three American auto manufacturers-- The members of Congress who the those idiots groveled for were majority white men
2) The biggest scam artist on Wall Street-- The man prosecuting Madoff is white
3) Major companies that are struggling to stay alive-- The Business Incubator & one of the most successful businesses in Youngstown as of late (Turning Tech) are you guessed it, led by white men
Staying in tune with your piece, let's counter your contrasting points:
1) Obama-- I'm a white guy and I voted for Obama not Hillary or Mccain! I'm having a good year so far, my guy won for a change
2) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi-- If your argument for Obama's heritage is to be taken seriously than so must Pelosi's. Also, she is married to a white man and if the saying goes behind every good man is a good woman than you could just as easily say vice versa
3) Most successful coach in professional football-- One of the least successful coaches in football this year is a black guy (Browns). The teams with the best records in both conferences (who also beat Tomlin's team this year) were coached by white men
4) Kobe & Lebron-- Obviously I will give you the NBA but how about the last two NFL MVPS (2008, 2007) being white guys
5) Slumdog Millionare-- This was a movie written by a white man (screenplay) and directed by a white man
Who cares if these people are white or black or brown? I guess, I should re-phrase, besides you Bert and other narrow-minded people, who cares?
Get over yourself Berty. Lumping people together because of the color of their skin is an outdated and racist viewpoint. Jews, Italians and Irish are each different just as Sunni and Shiite are different, just as Lebron and Maurice Clarett are different. Just because they have similar skin tones doesn't mean a damn thing. I wouldn't lump you in with Osama and I don't like you lumping me in with Madoff.
Bert, I think Ytown has had enough of your idiotic viewpoints. Paul Gains once explained to me that he told you someone was going to try and kill him when running for Prosecutor. He said you scoffed at that idea and thought he was paranoid. You were obviously wrong then. You are off the mark here too.
While I do value a difference in opinion, I don't think the Vindicator is the proper place for your resentments.
All I can say is that I was downtown on the night of Pavlik's fight and I've never seen the city so full of energy, so full of life in my entire 24 year lifetime.
The people who whine about your Pavlik coverage don't matter. These people will whine about anything while doing nothing to help the city's reputation.
I'm proud to be from Youngstown. Everything that has happened in this town has made us into what we are today, tough and resilient. And if some people here don't see the correlation between the Valley & our blue-collar pugilists taking punches yet still coming forward and fighting... Then those people don't matter at all. I won't let them rain on our parade and the Vindicator shouldn't either, it isn't very often we have one.
JD010101 you completely missed the point of this article. The author isn't accusing you or other whites of being racist he is saying that the book explores the topic and comes to the conclusion that racism exists, no matter what color you are. I'm white and grew up in ytown, racism exists there. It is everywhere, don't lie to yourself and try to blame it on other people. Everyone has prejudices, myself included. Confront your own prejudices and you'll learn a lot about yourself and racism. Stop passing the buck.
When I was 16 in the mahoning valley, I was confronted by a man who gave me a business card for the KKK. I kept it as a disturbing reminder of how bad people still lurk around, even in our valley and how hatred & racism still exist.
Let's start naming some important things Tim Ryan has done in his over six years in Congress...
Well we all remember that weird publicity stunt he did with blogging about trying to live on food stamps. Can anyone else think of anything he actually accomplished?
Here is how useless Tim Ryan is, goto his Congressional page and watch the video that plays. Actual quote from CNN reporter: "You'll see Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan checking to see how many friends he's got on facebook." I didn't make that up, watch it for yourself! http://timryan.house.gov/
Also on that page you can find a headline from Jan. 8th 2009 reading: Rep.Ryan Introduces Bill to Keep Highest Point Named Mount McKinley. With all the trouble this country is in, Ryan is wasting everyone's time checking his friends on Facebook and introducing legislation about naming mountains.
Yeah, this guy really made a difference in Congress! He talks a lot of good stuff on the floor but doesn't accomplish anything. Don't vote for him anymore, six years is enough time, if you can't accomplish anything meaningful in that time frame, then you should go away and let someone else try.
People forget Atown isn't really a town. It's a township, a suburb, a part of Youngstown. I grew up in Austintown and graduated from Fitch. The mailing address isn't actually Austintown, it is Youngstown.
Everyone in Atown, and the other burbs too, need to stop acting so contentiously about this JEDD. Like it or not, we are all Youngstown in the Mahoning Valley, if not in name than in fate. Obviously the numbers don't lie, if Youngstown continues to die, so will the valley.
The truth is that it doesn't feel so bad. When I was in high school at the beginning of this decade, Atown had no real shopping or restaurants. You had to goto Boardman or somewhere else. In the last five-six years Atown has built itself up a little. The problem is that people aren't moving in.
I agree that the lack a major employer is hurting but that is happening all across our country. Republicans will spin the death of American manufacturing by saying that small business is the most common form of employment today. The problem is that small business doesn't build communities like steel mills or Lordstown did. Small business doesn't get people to move into town.
To turn around the in migration in Atown and (the other parts of the valley) and get it off lists like the Forbes one, people have to embrace Youngstown. Team up with them because they share our fate. Time to get rid of the negative view of Youngstown... If the people of this area show a pride of the town and stand up for it, the national media will have a new angle when they look us up every four years and that will change the mind of some big business.
Be proud that your city has been through everything it has. Be proud that it is still standing. That you and everyone you know in the valley is still fighting. They don't make em quite like Ytown anymore, I'm proud of that.
On the topic of whether or not it "matters where I get my news..." --
I am a registered independent. I am liberal on some issues and a bit conservative on others. But I live in reality and can honestly say that it does matter where you get your news. Newspapers nice but if you're unfamiliar with the author, it is tough to tell if they are writing from an objective view point. Facts, numbers and even interview quotes can be arranged to prove anyone's point.
Onto TV, when anchors have open biases (Sean Hannity, Campbell Brown, Allen Colmes, Greta Van Sustren, Megyn Kelly etc) and try peddling their opinions as news, it does in deed matter. Sadly, many people who watch these shows take these anchors opinions as "news."
I listed a mix of anchors from both Fox News and CNN for a reason. Like it or not, Fox News is one of the most biased news stations. MSNBC is equally if not more so biased. CNN, while some anchors have their opinions on the left and right, is one of the closest stations to being unbiased. Compared to Fox News where almost all of the anchors are biased, there is a clear difference. Did anyone watch Fox News on election night after Obama was projected the winner? It seemed like someone shot Brit Hume's dog.
I admit that I do watch O'Reilly and even Keith Olberman (who are both really biased) but I'm sure it is for the same reason people listen to Howard Stern, for shock-value and occasional humor... Not for news!
Overall though, two of the best news anchors who keep themselves objective are Anderson Cooper & Wolf Blitzer who both host very good news programs and both happen to be on CNN which is why I would recommend that station for anyone of any belief or party status.
YoungstownMom, to say that CNN is way too liberal to watch is to say America is way too liberal to live in. I'll give it to you that lately they do side with the liberal point more often but you will have to admit that lately so does America.
It is sad to hear that more jobs are being lost at GM but the only people to blame are both the American public who went crazy over Hummers & other gas guzzlers and the heads of the American auto-industry who ignored fuel efficiency reports & European trends. The heads of this dying American industry stopped trying to push alternative fuel vehicles and smaller cars and instead opted to go bigger and bigger because idiots in our country drooled over each new Hummer model. Auto-workers and family members of them do have my sympathy but welcome to reality, your industry is near-death.

misdemeanor? This is a top story? What is convicting anyone of a misdemeanor really going to impact?
