Another reason to make drastic changes in upcoming elections, from legislators right up to the Governor....it's time for change!

For those who have jobs, be thankful. You may not see a reversal in this jobless trend until midway next year! Be patient, it will come.

I'm not a de Sousa fan, but his words speak the truth this time. TruthPac was on the right track to defeating Issue 3 until they decided to resort to mud slinging. When will people learn that mud slinging doesn't work anymore. People have become numbed to it's effects, some even enraged by the strategy. Now our constitution grants four casino's to one operator with no visible competition within the state of Ohio. Cross your fingers and hope for the best folks!

AKAFR1, who cares if its a permanent tax, you were already paying it and we obviously need it! If you don't like how Trafacantti spends it, vote him out...that's the power you and other voters have to make change. Also, are personal insults your only form of rebuttal?

Several others have suggested that additional paycuts made across county government offices would help our county operate in the black. I would have to agree, its a valid point. During these hard economic times, no new taxes resonates across most of our minds. However, this 1/2% sales tax was not a new tax, it was renewal with a provision to make it permanent, as AKAFR1 pointed out. It will be back on the ballot in May. If it doesn't pass, don't be surprised if county services across all departments are diminished.

I don't want sales taxes either, but this was a renewal, not a new tax! I for one don't want to see inmates being released early again from county jail because we can't afford to incarcirate them! When they're breaking into your home or stealing your car, you'll wish you had renewed this sales tax!

AKAFR1, what adjacent business have you frequented? I've been there to, there's not much worth visiting.

I do agree, Casino's are just one piece of economic development, albeit, one I'd rather do without. I'd much prefer service, R&D, manufacturing, or technology businesses to start-up or locate in Ohio. As 'youngstownshrimp' mentions in his post, it brings many temporary jobs for architects, engineers, construction workers, decorators along with capital project and material purchases...then once that's all completed, some Ohioans will gain fulltime employment and the state will collect taxes.

I just feel very strongly that this casino business will fall far short of the promises made by the operators and state legislators. I'd prefer gambling stayed in Vegas, Atlantic City or Biloxi.

I'm far more interested in what the Youngstown Incubator has done for the valley. This is the sort of initiative we should be supporting. Real technology start-ups that create real jobs!

LOL, I think you should pay attention a little more. A warrent check was done on her and showed a bench warrent for an unpaid traffic violation. The traffic violation had already been paid. The first question you should ask is why did the warrant check not reflect this? The second question you should ask, is what probable cause did he have to stop her in the first place? The warrant check was run after the traffic stop...not before. That's a no no.

LOL, your arguement would have more merit if the timeline was a little different. So please keep your opinion to yourself if your not going to take the time to read up on the facts.

The chain of events at the jail sound a little unprofessional by the jailors. It will be up to higher powers to determine if her constitutional rights were abused.

As is usually the case in this situation, it's much easier to ignore the problem and act like nothing is wrong...as nearby residents most likely did. I'm sure there were obvious tell-tale signs of something seriously wrong with this family. Nobody ever saw the animals outside? Nobody smelled anything foul? The children never looked dirty? It's higly unlikely, but I don't think its worth spending any additional time talking about. Lets get those kids situated, put into schools/daycare and placed in a stable home.

Lets get these parents rehabilitated and reunited with their children. That should be the only priority here. Only god knows where these people went wrong, but that's in the past now. If something isn't done, you might as well add two more people (the children) to the long list of screwed up people in this area that we'll be dealing with in the upcoming years.

I'm sorry, the gamgling industry is saturated with to many casino's nationwide. Do the homework people and you'll see that many have filed bankruptcy in the last two years...including Greektown up in Detroit. Nearly half the states with gambling have seen operators file bankruptcy. In such a slow economy, casino's hardly seem like a good idea to raise revenue, considering the negative things they bring with them (drugs, prostitution, gambling addicts, etc.).

fudputer;
'to ysu grad..with all your education--what the hell have you done except type!!!! Betras -hurry --now that your ideas went bust--see where you can get your share, for the people of course' same old story-same old s---..
long live 4 Aces...'

Fudputer...I could say the same about you, its way to easy to knock down my opinion but offer no solution yourself. You also have done nothing but type. Keep your opinion to yourself if all you have are insults....your response was very weak. Naturally Betras is talking about the tax revenue now...he has no choice since the issue passed.

AKAFR1, i really don't think comparing the surrounding area of V&M to the geography of Greektown are the same. The vicinity surrounding V&M died back in 1980 when US Steel closed down....literally tens of thousands of jobs were gone. V&M barely employs 500 now. The scales of economy are a little different today...it's hardly enough to clean up the area and attract new business. You would need to bring in multiple new businesses that employed thousands to make a difference there.

My only point is casino's will solve very little. I agree it will bring new tax revenue to the state, as well as new jobs. However, it will never meet the lofty numbers that casino operators are promising. With every border state already having gambling, Ohio will attract very little out of state gamblers, other than the initial curious travelers. Once that early enfatuation is gone, why would they come back when they already have gambling in their own states? Sorry folks, we already missed the boat on gambling being a big winner in Ohio.
