Obama still a "tough sell" in Valley

The city's inability to move into the future is apparent for the mere fact that the residents are stuck in the past.

Biden, Clinton are Valley bound

Hey Y-towners,

Get your collective a$$es in gear and look past the fear the conservatives are offering you. I'm simply amazed that the polls in ohio have this race as close as it is. What the F**(&in hell are you waiting for?? the complete and utter destruction of Ohio before you FINALLY realize that the Republicans offer YOU NOTHING that matter to your pockets or your retirement? Are you willing to throw your future, i'll say it again your future (as in YOURS and no one elses) away over social issues.

The republicans and their ilk want to use social issues to get your vote. WHO THE HELL CARES about abortion, gays, guns and religion when your HOME, CHECKBOOK AND JOBS ARE UNDER DIRECT ASSAULT??? I'm sorry but anyone who is is voting on 1 issue alone (other than the economy) is an absolute DUNCE. A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E DUNCE!! I don't care if the candidates have tulips growing out of their skulls and are yellow with purple polka-dots. I'm going to vote for the guy who is cool, calm and collected in a time of crisis. And if you have trouble reading between the lines, let me spell it out for you.....O-B-A-M-A & B-I-D-E-N are the ones to lead.

If you subscribe to the bull that Rush and O'Reilly are feeding you, I feel sorry for your children, your grandchildren, your great-grandchildren and your great-great grandchildren for YOUR short-sightedness, foolishness, bigotry and ignorance. If you can't bring yourselves to vote for someone that has the values of the middle-class in his mind and heart, I pray for your very soul. In fact do all of us a favor, if you truly feel that you could never bring yourself to vote for anyone who is not VISIBLY like you, don't vote at all. In the inconceivable notion that all your worst fears are correct about Obama and Biden, and that every ridiculous allegation is true, you can at least say "I didn't vote for him". The alternative is to vote for a team of 'mavericks' that have consistently shown themselves to be unstable, erratic, irrational and wrong on almost every possible important issue in this election.

I have said it over and over again to everyone i know over the past 8 years, we deserve what we got with George W. Bush at the helm, (although i didn't vote for him) I blame myself for not doing more to educate more people on the issues. WE DESERVE BETTER!

NO MORE! I will hold my friends, family and community now personally accountable for the choices they make this election cycle. Be warned! there is a growing majority of us that will not , WILL NOT tolerate your inaction, idiocy, bigotry, hate, ignorance and small-mindedness. You're messing with my future and my kidsfuture and i'm going to take it personally this time.

Democrats accuse locals of being racist toward Obama

As a part time Youngstowner, living in a pretty blue state all other times, I think I can comment about the "atmosphere" in the tri-county area. Relatively speaking, there is a general racist tone in the valley. I am embarrassed to admit that the "n" word flows freely in conversations all over town. I've overheard an elderly couple in JCPenny utter the word, I've heard it in conversations at BW3's, I've heard it in church. I've heard it even in my own family. I've heard it at Giant Eagle in boardman, I heard it in Wal-mart. My point is this, the free use of that "word" says something about the valley. and it isn't positive. Listening to some talk radio, since being without electricity for days on end, is very enlightening. I've heard liberal and i've heard conservative shows, both allow people to say racist comments on a fairly regular basis without anyone pointing out that some of the comments are in fact racist. At first i thought some of the hosts allowed it for shock value, however i soon learned that this is entirely normal. Its very concerning. I am not saying that everyone in y-town is racist or do i believe that in the end it will cost Obama the election. I am saying that we kinda live in a bubble in the valley. So many people i know, have never been out of the state or have visited large metropolitan areas, not because they are poor or don't have the means, its just because they "don't want to". Myself, living in one of the largest cities in the world, when i'm not in the area, wish that more people would get out and discover the world. If, the whispers and overheard conversations in youngstown, were said in polite company in the city where i spend half my time, you'd be more than frowned upon.
As for the reasons to not vote for Obama, spare me the tripe over "raising taxes". I dare say that anyone living in the valley would have to worry about that. I'd say that if you think that raising taxes on those making 250K+ a year is concerning to you, i think you are overestimating your income. In fact, i think those making over 125k+ in the valley would still be in the upper 1 percentile of wage earners in the valley.

McCain picks Palin: AP

It is insulting to my intelligence that by simply putting Palin on the ticket would capture my vote. McCain did a disservice to his integrity as a a so-called maverick by letting the party bully him into this pick. I have a feeling that when the party insiders got wind of a possible Lieberman or Romney pick, he was marched down to the principals office (Karl Rove) and told in no uncertain terms to "get in line" behind a more conservative pick or else he couldn't count on more money from the right flowing into his campaign. I'm sorry but as a free thinking individual i will not be voting on wedge issues such as abortion, guns and gay marriage this time around. None of those outweigh the most concerning issue of this election or time, the Economy. Does anyone honestly think, that by voting on these wedge issues alone, we will get ahead as a community? It can only serve to divide us further. Can banning guns or allowing them solve the problem on the south side? NO, reversing the economic trend first can do more good in getting guns off the streets. The evidence clearly shows that people with stable and growing economic conditions are far less likely to be involved in violent crime. Does the Pro-life/Pro-choice argument get us anywhere in solving teen pregnancy? NO, again stabilize the economy and provide an atmosphere where people can actually get ahead, (not working at the local burger joint)and I guarantee you abortion rates will drop. All of these little issues can only be looked at after we get our economy back on track. The biggest threat to our way of life and economy right now is CHINA. They manipulate their economy as they see fit, and we suffer the consequences. We borrow endless amounts of money from them to pay endless amounts of money to the arab states, that TOTALLY HATE US! I have no faith that Palin has any inkling or shred of knowledge on how are deficit, our markets, our military or our state department, actually function. A 72 year old heartbeat stand between a maverick president and a rookie if we choose McCain. Are you willing to bet the farm on that?

Will Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s selection as GOP vice president make you more likely or less likely to vote for U.S. Sen. John McCain for president?
