The district is irreparably broken when students are transferring during the school year - which is obvious when you see they had no idea how many students they had in Youngstown. I heard that Austintown had picked up some 400 students from Youngstown thanks to open enrollment - so the loss of 270 cannot be correct. Too bad - beautiful new buildings and fewer students in them because no one who gives a damn about their children lets them go to Youngstown City Schools.

It is about time! Let's examine the other charter schools as well!

OK folks. He's home and apparently has a fill-in (perhaps eventually permanent) job. That's all anyone can ask of anyone who is re-entering society from prison. I think we can all stop talking about him now. Thinking, informed, educated voters would not vote for Mr. Traficant for any public position. I guarantee it. We have indeed moved on - let's ALL move on.

Bertram, it is time for you to start paying attention to the goings on at YSU again. Since you have no chance of influencing or affecting the idiots who support Traficant, you have a far better chance of influencing public good by exposing the pecadillos at YSU. Just my opinion.

Just FYI - Youngstown has many of the same academic assistance programs as does Campbell. You are not asking the correct questions, Mr. Brown. I would challenge you to inquire as to the disciplinary support the teachers receive from the administration. We already know that Dr. Webb embraces the "hug a thug" philosophy. I would be very interested in Mr. Robey's disciplinary philosophy. If Campbell is scoring so well, to me that means there is greater academic support for in-school education regardless of the home environment.

In regard to the membership of the Board of Education in Youngstown, the problem is that there is no room for the non-politically connected - and that the only people interested are those who see it as a political stepping stone or are just plain personally ignorant and incapable of overseeing the change needed in the district, including finding a way to remove the Superintendent and replacing her with someone competent and able to effect strong positive change. It may take a little longer to accomplish those goals in the district, but Dr. Webb and her friends have had their chance.

Being poor is no excuse for devaluing education. If you want to see scores improve in Youngstown, radical change must be made. I support the earlier post about setting up residence halls for children who lack the basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter and have parents (or a parent) who is too immature, an addict, uneducated or just plain lazy to provide those things for their children. I am tired of hearing about the "achievement gap" referring almost exclusively to underrepresented students. The achievement gap will be present wherever support for education is lacking in the home environment.

Finally, the quality of candidates for the board of education is totally unacceptable for a district this size. It is time to revamp the board of education and reduce it from the present seven members to five and have them appointed by the mayor rather than running for office. Changing the board members is the only way to change the leadership - as both the superintendent and the treasurer are the only employees who serve at the pleasure of the board of education. Based on the feedback provided on this site - public sentiment is against the superintendent continuing in a role to which she should never have been appointed.

So, Mr.Catale, exactly what does the board plan to do? Fire the superintendent? Oh, I forgot, her contract was already renewed and it would cost the board plenty to get rid of her. Congratulations Youngstown! The ONLY school district in the state in academic emergency!! Now that's progress!!

My heart goes out to many (not all) of the teachers. This change is a result of poor administrative decisions and the "hug" mentality of the superintendent. My children attended Youngstown City Schools. What is the point of assigning homework that will not be done? There are no home consequences for many of these students, so the teachers have to put aside the brightest and best in order to attend to the underachiever. Time is then set aside in class for what would normally be homework assignments. I am sick to death of hearing about the "achievement gap." Sure it exists - for black and white, hispanic and asian - in homes where education is not a priority. So when does that become my problem? My children were expected to fulfill their assignments and earn a high school diploma. Everyone else should hold their children to the same standard.
