Let this hockey team fold, and watch the Canton Charge move to the Centre. They wanted to come here the first time, but Mr. Zoldan would not give up any weekend dates. They'll train at the Niles Wellness Center, and will expand that facility for its players, and the community. Trust me, this was the original plan. They'd jump ship from Canton in a heartbeat for a newer, modern arena, and the Cavaliers would love to draw from the entire region.
Next, get a true minor league team in here, perhaps in the ECHL? And market the heck out of it. Players in that league are young, and can make it in the NHL. You have teams as close as Wheeling, Cincy, and Toledo.
It's a beautiful facility, and it's an area where things can work. But you have to invest in a marketing and public relations staff firmly committed to making things happen. That means spending some money to make money.
I would say the biggest problem for the Phantoms is the league. They're high schoolers. I beg for the ECHL to return; at least they were professionals. Nothing personal against the league/players, but I'm hard pressed to spend minor league money on amateurs. And as I previously stated, Mr. Zoldan is thee reason why the Cavaliers minor league team went to Canton. They WANTED to be in Youngstown, but Zoldan wouldn't give up weekend dates. Let the hockey team leave, and make a move with the Cavs. The Centre should also be hosting more YSU home games, IMO. It's a great facility for this region, and can be so much more. I like that they're hosting more concerts, but if you can get the Charge to leave Canton, and get a TRUE minor league hockey team here, now you may be on to something.
Somebody should tell Zoldan to go pound salt. He's the reason the Cavaliers minor league team isn't in Youngstown. That's a far, far better draw than his rinky dink glorified high school team. He held up that entire deal.
I've always been curious why the YSU basketball teams do not play at Covelli? Great venue, great sightlines, and a much, much better experience than their dumpy little gym. Would also be good for incoming recruits to know they'd play in a true arena setting, and it would help to bring some better programs to play here in Youngstown. Would be better for the Arena's bottom line too, no?
Listen, I'm glad they're paying more (still not much compared to the rest of us) for their health care. But here's the line that shocks me: "The starting base salary for Niles teachers remains at $28,443 with a maximum base of $59,161 for those with 27 years of experience." THIS is what a teacher gets paid around here? They have to obtain Master's Degrees and go for continuing education throughout their careers, and THIS is their salary? That's embarrassing, plain and simple. No offense to those at Lordstown (who bust their rear ends. I know; have family members there), but for them to make significantly more than our teachers is puzzling, IMO. We expect teachers to be these amazing facilitators for our children, and pay them a pathetic compensation figure.
Am I the ONLY one to notice Governor Christie was there as well? It's OK for him to get a free pass, though. I mean, the First Lady is merely a term, while Christie actually has a job to lead the state. But let's give him a free pass, right? I'm sure he paid for everything out-of-pocket.
Also, fantastic of the first commenter to make a comment about her appearance. Truly, truly classy. Real nice to spew out garbage and hide behind an internet persona.
Do some research to see how many trips the Bush twins took while their old man was in office, and how much we paid for those. Especially their Argentina trip, where the Secret Service basically gave up trying to monitor them. Every administration sees family members do "fun" things. They have a right to live privately for a bit too; it's part of the gig. Reagan and Bush, Jr. loved going to their ranches (all on our dime). Bush Sr. basically lived in Maine while in office. Clinton. Well, Clinton did his vacationing in the Oval Office.
But hey, lets not let facts get in the way of a good ole' fashioned Obama-bash. Happy Memorial Day, everybody!!!!!!!!!!!
Could this be hockey's last season at the Covelli Centre?
