"Same old tune of party politics"? How can you say this, when the party, admittedly because Gains won't play politics, has endorsed Macejko? The Vindy's got it right: Gains's integrity shines a light on the most powerful law enforcement office in the county - finally, after years of darkness and corruption. Those who want to put their money into controlling county offices really should endorse similarly qualified candidates for other offices that need capable and honest leaders, just as the prosecutor's office needs Paul Gains. Everyone who wants to see elective offices run without the influence of corruption or megabucks has a vested interest in Gains's re-election -- and hopefully that means everyone who cares enough to write comments to these posts. The pay raises he gave were within his budget and still don't bring his staff up to the level of those in other similar offices, even in the city prosecutor's office. Give the Vindy credit for knowing that honesty in office is such a rarity that it needs to be encouraged and protected.
Good for you. Now, if one can stop congratulating oneself for one's acumen long enough to look up the difference between "in lieu of" and "in view of" ... (I wish we were living in lieu of earthquakes!)
@ Maillis: Then I would suggest Jay use the word "somber," not "sober," which to most readers means only one thing. And it's a low and unforgivable thing to say, since as you say, neither you nor Macejko ever believed Gains to be "a drunk." Guess it's politically OK to suggest it, though.
Lot of assumption going on with these comments ... and, originally, with the story. Would have been smart to have a "police said" somewhere in that first paragraph ... helps to avoid lawsuits.
I have to agree. Add the price of purchase to the value of the grant to tear it down (and where did our "broke" state get this kind of money for cleanup? Isn't that an owner's responsibility?), and you come up with more than $883,000! For an empty lot! Multiply that figure by 15, and that's the value of the groceries that the foodbank could have gotten for a truly important cause. Somebody's head was in the sand on this one.
And the GOP isn't creating this stalemate because of the money involved -- the figures show both sides are close on the budget they'd agree on, and it's too high no matter who approves of it. The GOP is trying to force changes to Roe vs. Wade, and to environmental protection policies -- the first, to exert their control over women, the second, to be able to turn heretofore protected land over to big business, cattle interests and others who support them. Read what the BLM is doing to wild horses in the West, on what has been declared protected land, to see what's happening... And Roe vs. Wade is important not because it allows abortion -- no woman really approves of abortion -- but because it allows CHOICE, which provides dignity in circumstances where there would otherwise be none.
The box on page 1 of today's Vindy says: Military will receive IOUs in lieu of money... Congressional Members will be paid ON TIME. Emphasis mine. Don't blame the media, Average Citizen. Our politicians, no matter what party, are all cut from the same cloth!
UPDATE: Vindicator honored with top state awards
In both instances above when you've used the word "it's," it should have been "its." Otherwise, congratulations to all.

Absence of tapes puts brakes on Oakhill case
It's the purchase of Oakhill itself that needs investigated. Who in their right mind ...?
