2 Mahoning school superintendents to retire-rehire in new year

If this bothers you, don't blame the individuals, blame the system. Ohio's State Teachers Retirement System allows for these situations. If I were one of these superintendents, I would do the same thing.

By the way, let's not overlook the fact that $100k per year is not a huge salary for the duties that this job entails. These folks could have gotten a job in the private sector making far more money, but they chose to work in public school systems for less pay, just as teachers do.

Texting driver gets 45 days in jail in death of Springfield man

This entire situation is a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to the Muslovski family as losing a family member, especially so quickly, is very difficult. Distracting driving is dangerous and sometimes even deadly, as this incident shows us. And when a person loses their life, there should most certainly be repercussions.

However, can all of you who sit in judgement of Yaeger honestly say you have never been guilty of distracted driving? Have you never been behind the wheel of the car and been preoccupied by a text, phone call, your children in the backseat, changing the radio station, etc.? Distracted driving includes so much more than just texting. May we all learn something from this tragedy.

Be responsible. Be safe.

Fighting US’s worst teen pregnancy rate in Miss.

Lifes2Short: You and I both know that they have other options. Unfortunately, they have been taught differently. Kids only know what they learn.

I was taught to grow up, get an education, become a responsible adult, get married and then have children. And, by doing so, I'm proud of the example that I'm setting for my own children. But I'm not so jaded as to believe that everyone else in this world shares my outlook.

Fighting US’s worst teen pregnancy rate in Miss.

This problem begins at home. It is first and foremost the parents responsibility to teach their children good morals.

I think this article incorrectly states that teen pregnancy is "caused" by poverty. However, I understand what they are saying. Impoverished families, specifically those who have been living off of the system their entire lives, are more likely to raise children who become pregnant as teenagers. Unfortunately, it's a vicious cycle. As these kids get closer and closer to turning 18 and becoming a legal adult, many of them they see getting pregnant and living off of the system as common place; their only option.

Pa. police: 2 women admit their role in slaying of Beaver Twp. woman, 20

Such a tragedy. I pray for comfort for Brandy's family.

But my question is...why did it take so long for local (Youngstown) media to pick up this story?? This woman was reported missing on Saturday and I personally had heard about it by Monday, thanks to a grass roots Facebook campaign by Brandy's friends and family. Yet local media didn't report a single thing on this story until Thursday night, after her body had been found. What a shame.

New Ohio rule calls for hiring court interpreters

Dodge2002 -- let's remember that not everyone involved in a court case may be someone who is a citizen (legally or illegally) of the U.S. Imagine if you were simply visiting a foreign country and had a run in with the law, whether you were at fault or not. Would you not appreciate someone in the courtroom who could help you communicate with officials? My point is that this is not a cut and dry issue as you make it out to be, all circumstances are different.

Valley military mom protests airline rebooking fees

It is only appropriate for the airline to waive the change fees for parents of servicemen in circumstances such as these. In reading this story, I see that Ms. Flood booked her ticket through a third-party, Cheap Tickets. It's safe to assume that part of the additional $300 she would have been charged was a fee from Cheap Tickets, who should also adopt a waiver policy in such circumstances.

No. 1: Ursuline football three-peats

I absolutely agree that the OHSAA needs to separate the public and private schools to level the playing field. However, this does not diminish the hard work that the players and coaches at Ursuline put in to win the title this -- congratulations!

Springfield student accused of shooting threats

Lifes2Short -- Unfortunately, the notion that teenagers "think they're always right" isn't anything new and probably won't change (I know that I, to an extent, had that attitude as a teen). As they get older, they'll see the wisdom in the words that adults gave them when they were younger. But until then, many of them won't take what we have to say seriously. All that we can hope is that, in those years between childhood and adulthood, they don't make a mistake so irreversible that it will negatively impact the remainder of their lives or the lives of others.

gobucks22 -- I respect that this is your friend and that you support him as such. But keep in mind that he did commit a crime. I certainly hope that you and other students at SLHS are not in support of the actual crime.

Springfield student accused of shooting threats

Based on the police report, I think that this boys words were spoken in the heat of the moment and there was very little likelihood that the threats would have been carried out.

However, this young man needs to realize that such comments are unacceptable in the real world. He could face these same criminal charges had he made the threats to a co-worker, a friend or even just a waiter at a restaurant. This gentleman is 18-years old -- this will be a difficult lesson for him to learn, but I hope that other young adults can benefit from his mistake, as well.
