I know that my 6 year old believes in santa but like every other educated person he will outgrow that belief like I did with god. The stories, yes stories, of jesus are influential and mostly because of one very important fact. Contstantine declared xianity the official religion and MIthra was replaced as the one true risen savior god in the 4th century. Had that not happened xianity would as popular as wicca at best. The ideas of jesus have influenced us greatly and usually for bad. The do gooders would be good with or without religion but I get your point. When xianity is presented as mythology like any other religion I"m fine but when it's the "true" religion and others are false I explain why that's arrogant. Stan, the FF were Deists from the Enlightenment Era who read Voltaire and John Locke and were aware of the Inquisitions and Crusades so they purposely created a secular government with freedom of religion and freedom of speech so it' s clear they saw the need to not create a xian nation. Life, when I do go to fourth of july parades or veteran ceremonies I do wear my blue Navy baseball cap that say's Navy Rescue Swimmer and my friendly neighborhood atheist t-shirt. I don't cower because of my atheism/veteran status. Why would I want to find god? I don't see any need. Sam Harris makes good points about watering down god.
