How are your tax dollars spent?

Yes, Borylie, we can stop buying GM cars, but that doesn't negate the fact that the government used our tax money to bail them out. I'm certainly not complaining about that, but I can tell you that the private sector GM workers would be livid if each and every one of their names & salaries was posted for the public eye. As I said, you want to post positions and earnings, that's fine, I applaud it. But because I'm a public employee, I shouldn't be stripped of my privacy. I too am a taxpayer.

How are your tax dollars spent?

I'm with you Glibby. I'm one of those public servants who has my name listed and the salary I make. I truly have no probliem with that. I'm thrilled to see that people who think that public employees have these fabulous salaries can see that we're just average citizens for the most part. That being said, I also believe the Vindicator should post every single person, by name and salary, from GM. After all, didn't the government bail out GM? Therefore, I, as a taxpayer, should have the right to know what each and every GM employee earns. I also believe that since we're subscribers to the Vindicator and therefore pay their employees' salaries, that we should be informed about how much each and every Vindicator employee earns....the list goes on and on. Public employee or not, we're still entitled to privacy. If the Vindicator wants to list job positions and earnings for each and every job in the city/county/state, I would applaud them. I think it's crass and totally inappropriate to name names. My next search is going to the ethics section of this new site.

Statewide drive to repeal SB 5 gets green light

First off Jessie, you talk about public employees as if they don't pay taxes. We are taxpayers just like the private sector. The only difference is, I, as a public employee also have to pay my own wages because I am paying the same taxes as you do. But here's the catch, because I'm a public employee who will be collecting PERS, I will not be able to collect the full Social Security that I have paid in as a private employee. My benefits will be offset because of my PERS. Do you have your SS benefits offset when your employer matches your 401K?? Hardly. So let's talk about the golden pensions the public employee gets. I have always wondered how millions of people could be led to the gas chambers without fighting back. Now I can see. There are so many untruths being spewed and because people are so hateful when they think that the guy next door might have it a little better than they do, they believe anything thrown at them. Hitler said he would have one half of the poor, kill the other half....so goes Kasich.

Statewide drive to repeal SB 5 gets green light

I have been a public employee for 15 1/2 years. I also have a bachelor's degree. Just this past year, I finally hit the $40,000 mark. How do you raise a family on that? My projected PERS pension is $24,000 a year. How will I be living in the lap of luxury after my family is grown and I can finally retire?? So saying that public employees are getting rich is a bunch of lies, I also have a job in the private sector (hard to believe that we rich public employees need to work 2 jobs to raise our families, isn't it?) with a billion dollar corporation that has record profits, yet pays it's employees minimum wage & expects me to work a 9 hour shift without even a 30 minute lunch break. I work alone and have to sneak into the restroom between customers, if mother nature calls. Am I for unions? Absolutely. I only wish I could bring the union into my private sector job so that these employees don't have to work in the sweat shop conditions that they are forced while the rich get richer and take advantage of the middle class and poor.

Another perceptive reader on the GOP

So db, you're going to tell me that your sister-in-law and her friend were both making approximately $90,000 in wages as a teacher and a firefighter? That's what they would have had to gross in order to receive $59,000/$57,000 for retirement with 30 years. I think you need to get your finger out of the jelly jar.

Chamber loses more members over Senate bill

I guess Mr. Ryan doesn't realize that those "organized labor cultures that have dominated this area for decades" are also the same people that have made HIS businesses successful. If "the Chamber deserves to be supported by everyone that does business in the region," then the Chamber should also support everyone that does business in the region and should remain neutral in this controversy.

Sunday column sequel | A chat with a judge

"PERS" is not taxes. PERS is the employee's retirement plan, paid in lieu of Social Security. County workers pay the same taxes as everyone else, so in essence, pay for themselves to work. And yes, the county does pick up some or most of the PERS per contract negotations. Keep in mind that those pick-ups were in lieu of raises. Oh that's right, county workers aren't support to get raises. They're supposed to work for nothing then get publicly flogged, having their names and incomes splashed all over the paper, for abiding to a decision that was totally out of their hands. In hindsight, it may have not been a good decision, but this issue is getting old. You really need to find a new whipping boy.

Sunday column sequel | A chat with a judge

3 sides to every story. First "county workers" pay taxes too, so why wouldn't they care?? Next, if they Vindy is going to post "raises," how about if they get their numbers right? And don't forget to mention that those raises were negotiated in a 3 year contract. The county didn't just decide to hand out money at the beginning of the year. Lastly, the news media is so ready to sensationalize EVERYTHING, then when people actually believe them, they criticize them. Plenty of county workers showed up for work yesterday to be turned away. Maybe it wasn't a good call, but maybe the media needs to look at themselves before they're so ready to crucify the county workers.
