It is highly offensive that all of you write as if all tenants are low income, criminal-minded people. Homeownership is not attainable to many residents for many different reasons. Just because someone chooses to rent v/s own, doesn't make them a second class citizen! This fee will not solve any problems in the city. It will drive good landlords out of business and drive good tenants from their homes. This city will loose all around. If bad tenants are the problem, then the police and judges should do a better job. If a person is committing a crime and the police are called, and charges are filed, than the judges should impose stricter penalties and/or jail time. That is how you clean up crime. A $1,000 fee on rental properties and a $85/month increase on renters will not clean up the city!
