YSU should start planning for fall enrollment decline

The local parents and their kids need to boycott YSU for a semester. Just maybe that would get their attention.....then again, maybe not.

County pays all retirement contributions in new Mahoning CSB deal

Certainly, these poor individuals aren't overpaid at the rates quoted in this article. I wonder how much their union dues are and just how much good it does them to belong to a union in this day and age. This is an excellent reason to support the initiative to place a right to work referendum on the ballot and give Ohio workers the freedom of choice that they all deserve. If you want to join the union, that's fine. If you don't want to join the union, then your freedom to choose should be respected. Furthermore, the government should not be in the business of collecting union dues. If you want to belong to a union then send them a check every month, just like you do for your car payment. I believe Ohio voters will support this very important freedom of choice if given the chance at the ballot box, particularly after seeing what happened in Wisconsin with the Scott Walker recall fiasco. After all, who wouldn't want more choice?

Local union official blasts Romney on jobs, supports Obama plan

Just one more good reason to give Ohio residents the freedom of choice they deserve through a right to work law. If you want to join the union then join it. If not, then you shouldn't be forced to do so. And the state or any other government entity should not be required to deduct union dues from your paycheck. If you want to join the union, then send them a check every month, just like you do for your cable TV bill. I think if this makes it to the ballot, particularly after what happened in Wisconsin with the Failure of the Scott Walker recall, Ohio voters will support this.

Official: Public can fight school privatization

No one wants to admit that the elephant in the room is the fact that these other school alternatives were brought about by problems in the public schools. If the public schools were doing such a great job do you really think we'd have all of this competition? Think about it. The reason the Japanese started importing Toyota's here in the 70's stemmed from the fact that Ford and GM were selling us junk Pinto's and Vega's. Toyota filled a niche, much like these school alternatives are doing today.

Most people in the know will tell you that our public schools never really did that great of a job in the first place. We just didn't realize it, because you didn't need to know much to work in the mill or on the farm. Now that things have changed, our educational system must change as well. The increased competition will force the public schools to become better. In fact, I say give every child a voucher and allow him or her to spend it at the educational institution of their choice. The best schools will not only survive, they'll prosper.

Parking wars loom at YSU

There are numerous other good alternatives for higher education in the valley; KSU and EGCC being two of them. About 2/3 of these YSU students should consider taking a semester off. That might get the attention of the administrators.....then again, maybe not.

10 teachers, 31 others cut in Austintown

Do the employees of the Austintown School District all pay 15% toward their healthcare and 10% toward their retirement? To hear the unions talk during the SB5 ruckus, these contributions weren't the issue. Apparently they are........

If anyone thinks that the things that are happening in Greece can't happen here, you better think again.

Poland sets proposed fees for school sports, band

Are ALL employees of Poland Local Schools paying 15% of their healthcare and 10% or their retirement, yet? According to them, when SB5 was being voted on this was not an issue. They would have been glad to contribute these meager amounts.

Apparently, these meager contributions are an issue. Vote no on any and all levies until all Public employees make these meager contributions to their own gold-plated benefit packages.

Let's also remember the way the public sector is raping the taxpayers when it comes to signing a petition to place a Right To Work initiative on the November ballot. Making Ohio A Right To Work state won't prevent anyone from joining a union, or participating in collective bargaining. It will just protect those individuals who want to work but don't want to be forced to join the union. It is a way to respect everyone's freedom and who wouldn't want more freedom?

Reaction to a levy failure

Do the employees of Poland Local schools pay 10% of their retirement and 15% of their healthcare as SB5 would have mandated? Funny how all of the anti-SB5 crowd said these contributions weren't the problem. Apparently they were the problem. I wouldn't even think about passing a levy until every employee starts making these meager contributions to their own benefits. I hope the voters remember the way public employees take advantage of the taxpayers like this when it comes time to vote to allow Ohio to become a right to work state.

Youngstown schools face tough financial choices

How would it impact the district's finances if every employee in the district actually paid 15-percent of their healthcare costs and 10-percent of their retirement costs, as SB5 proposed? All of the SB5 opponents said this was not the issue. Apparently, it was because there are numerous public sector entities where the employees still do not even make these meager contributions to their own gold-plated benefit programs. Shame on them.

UNION LEADER: USPS IGNORED INPUT, OUTCRY

The closure of the Youngstown Postal facility is but one more consequence of not having a viable two party system in the Mahoning Valley. Think about it. From a national standpoint the GOP would never help the valley because we wouldn't support them no matter what they did for us. The Dems, on the other hand, don't need to help the valley because we'll vote them in no matter what they do or don't do for us. Nationally, the Dems can save a postal facility in a region where they need to actually compete with the GOP.
Just keep blindly voting for idiots like Hagan, Gerberry, and Ryan. They'll take care of you. Meanwhile, pray for your kids and grandkids as this area continues to deteriorate.
