Unfortunately, the Vindicator Reporter failed to ask Mr. McWreath what "Constitutional Right" was being violated by business placing signs in their windows. Businesses, like people , have a Constitutional Right to be secure in their homes. The US Supreme Court, in DC vs. Heller ruled that it is a Constitutional Right to have a firearm in your home for your protection. In addition, the Court stated the Second Amendment allows reasonable restrictions on firearms, including who can have them and under what conditions, where they can be taken, and what type of firearms are permissible. Mr. McWreath’s personal misinformed belief that his Right supersedes the Rights of others is wrong. If he wants to carry a gun, more power to him, but to force others to tolerate and give into his illogical interpretation of the most recent US Supreme Court ruling on the Second Amendment does not make sense. I am more disappointed in the reporter failing to have Mr. McWreath explain how his interpretation of the Second Amendment is so different than the US Supreme Court. Hats off to the businesses that stand up for their Rights and not bow to misinformed gun zealots.
The opinion of the conservative NRA members of the Supreme Court ruled that law abiding citizens have a right to own guns. However, the Court was very specific in stating the Government can regulate the types of weapons we can own and how and to whom guns can be sold to. We have laws on the book but the NRA through their legislative lobbing have made most of the law unenforceable or have so many loopholes that they are ineffective. We need new common sense laws. As the NRA always states, “Guns don’t Kill, People Do.” So it is time to have strong requirements for individuals owning or possessing firearms. Guns in themselves are inherently dangerous and individuals possessing them should be held accountable for their accessibility and use. I do not think it would be unreasonable to have all gun sales, even between individuals, be process by licensed gun dealers so background checks could be conducted on the purchaser. Also, with the increase in concealed weapons, the person authorized to carry a concealed weapon should be required to qualify with the gun using the same qualify requirements of the State police. Again, licensed gun dealers could conduct the qualifications and record the results. Also, police and district attorneys should be forbidden to drop gun charges on individuals arrested with a firearm or that used a firearm in a crime. Also, the NRA membership should ask why the NRA sponsors laws that allow more convicted criminals, suspected terrorist, and individuals with mental problems to possess firearms, and at the same time, severely restricting information on individuals using guns in criminal activity from being shared by law enforcement.
The "Right to Life" groups, the Catholic Bishops, and the Knights of Columbus seem to forget that aborting a life is against Christian beliefs. They align themselves with the beliefs of the radical Right and the NRA instead of believing in sensable laws to prevent some individuals from having firearms. The NRA believes "Guns don't Kill, But People Do" and refuse to support any regulations to stop individuals from aborting 30,000 lifes a year and aborting the quality of life for an additional 40,000 people a year that are injured by firearm violence. The recent Supreme Court 2nd Amendment decision stated that access to firearms can be regulated by Government so it it not a 2nd Amendment issue. I guess for these groups, as long as a fetus is not killed, it is OK for a young life to be aborted. However, in these cases two fetus were aborted because of gun violence and again, nothing was said by these groups. Shame!!!
