Hey AtownParent,

"Grand juries don't indite on circumstantial evidence."?

Of course they do.

As Bee said - "Grand Juries decide whether or not there is enough evidence to warrant a trial." Any evidence - circumstantial or not.

Hell, Scott Petersen was CONVICTED based upon circumstantial evidence. There wasn't one shred of physical evidence that pointed to him as Lacy's killer. But there was tons of circumstantial evidence.

I'd still like to believe that old fairytale about people being assumed to be innocent until proven guilty, however I've seen the Court of Public-Opinion at work too many times to actually believe it anymore.

Sad. Really Sad.

Interesting - everyone here seems to have brought up the fact that the mother should have taught him about accountibility for his actions and how the schools have taken this Zero tollerance Bulls%##@t too far and self defence and so forth. . .

What I'm wondering is what happened to the other kid that was in the fight? Unless this kid was beaing up himself, there was someone else involved. Why isnt his mother suing? What punishment did he get?

Just wondering - does anyone know?

Harbres,

There has been a ton of progress during Mayor Williams tenure. You need to keep in mind that the constant whinings of these perpetual malcontents like Grump and so many others here are simply a dying hold-over from the "Youngstown can never do anything right" mentality that, thankfully, is on its way out due largely to people like you moving back into the city from other parts of the country (BTW - I am one as well - not a native of the area).

Ungaro ran off to Liberty, McKelvey made some progress, Jay is finishing the job.

Welcome to Youngstown! (no sarcasm)

"It's time for someone new to run the city."

I've got an idea Grump - why dont YOU give it a try. . .

With all your Monday morning quarterbacking, and 20/20 hindsight wisdom, I'm sure you could do a much better job than anyone else ever possibly could.

At the very worst, you could get into office, and just build a big wall around the whole city! You could lay the last brick just as you are stepping out of town into the bright sunshine and crime free happiness that is Austintown!

Please tell me you guys are all kidding. . . .

You think its a horrible thing for the city/university/diocese to give this guy more than DOUBLE his money after a 7 year real-estate investment in Youngstown?
And by not doing so - it would hold up a 35 million dollar project which will add brand new buildings and create many more and better paying jobs that this machine shop.

Taking property via eminent domain almost always sucks, but lets face facts here.

1. This is not some historically significant or even particularly special structure.
2. This is not a generations old family business that has slugged it out during the bad times and is now having his business pulled out from under him - he bought the place in 2001.
3. He's doubling his money in 7 years in the middle of the worst real-estate market ever!
4. He's holding up a potentially 35 million dollar project over his 200K piece of property.

The judge made the right call.

Mr. Grenga - take the money - spend a quarter of it on another building (there's plenty of good candidates available) and continue your business. You're getting a much better deal than the rest of us on your property valuation.

Not that I disagree with you Stan, but where exactly will we put them?

I read every day about jail overcrowding and inmate law-suits, etc. They seemed to have completely clogged our legal system with complaints that may be frivolous, but have to be answered and dealt with anyhow.

Seems to me that one of our biggest problems, not only in Youngstown, but nationwide is that we scream "Jail Them!" for everything from J-Walking to Murder, but ignore the practical realities of what it actually takes to incarcerate a person. Unless we are willing to hire someone like Joe Arapaio (sheriff of Maricopa County / Phoenix Arizona), I don't see this situation getting better any time soon. I dont really care for Sheriff Joe's methods, but I gotta admit - he does get the job done.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Arpaio (check out the section on "Changes to Operations").

I believe we need to either get the costs and overcrowding problems under control or more carefully choose what we consider to be offenses that require jail time.

Hey btc2319 - thats commical.

How exactly do you sue a city for not paying the bill so we can have free parking anymore. The City doesn't own the parking lots (never did) the Frangos Group does. The city has been forking over the cash for you to park for free for the last 3 years and decided not to do it anymore. It is no more part of the price of a ticket you bought than the price of a beer at a pub after the show would be.

I think we should thank the city for footing the bill for the last 3 years and move on to paying for private parking garages like every other city (major or otherwise) does. You dont go into Pittsburgh and expect to park for free - do you? Cleveland - dont think so. Akron - nope. . . Why should Youngstown?

And to roscoepc - parking on the streets is still free. These are privately owned parking garages. Everything the city owns is still free, and many of the open lots are after business hours as well.

If you dont like the price of the parking garages, by all means - dont pay it. Park on the street or in one of the free lots. They're a whole 200 yards further away. The walk'll do you good.

Either way - quit whining about the city not footing the bill for the parking garages anymore - they've paid for it long enough.
