Valley residents rally for stalled Nitro’s Law in Columbus

The reason the legislation hasn't been voted on is because the Republicans in the majority have all been purchased by corrupt businessmen. The flavor of money merely enhances the GOP's natural inclination to let one of their own steal money from the public in any way possible without intervening protection from the State. It's called Capitalism in 21st Century America. Back in the Old Days it was called bribery, corruption, and felonious conduct.

Valley drilling on the move

The millions of pounds of toxic waste resting as sludge at the bottom of the Mahoning River are mute testament to the hidden costs of industrial development without proper controls. Too bad that people are still so easily corrupted by greed that they are willing to risk long-term pollution for the often ephemeral promise of gas and oil royalties.

Occupy Youngstown protestors plan to hold their ground

Sammarone and the police chief should be happy that Occupy Youngstown is in Central Square with their tents and sleeping bags. Everyone else wants to get out of town by 5:30 p.m. to get home to Boardman, Canfield and Poland. The Occupy Youngstown people might be the only people in the County who want to stay overnight in the city.

Go Go club case is gone

Prosecutorial incompetence again. The purpose of a summary judgment motion is to permit the court to analyze all of the evidence which the prosecution has and decide whether, if fully believed to be true by a jury, it is sufficient to sustain a conviction. If the prosecution failed to produce all of its evidence in front of Judge D'Apolito in county court, which is what Atty. Cantalamessa admitted, then it is fair to conclude that there was no co-ordination between the prosecutorial team which was prosecuting the dancers and the team which was prosecuting the club owner in common pleas court. If this was done by a private law firm the applicable descriptive words would be 'legal malpractice.'

Rep. Johnson: End out-of-control spending

The Republican party in Ohio doesn't care a whit about the Mahoning Valley, and the Democratic Party only cares when they need our votes to carry elections. Why should an ultra-conservative Republican from Marietta be the congressional representative for large segments of people who live in metropolitan Youngstown? And, that question goes almost equally well for the time when Democrat Ted Strickland, of Lucasville, was our congressman. I will give the Dems a bit of a pass-card on this, however, since the gerry-mandering process occurred on the Republican's watch in Columbus.

Ohioans could force recall elections

Lie Detector, you are an unlettered fool, and should refrain from future commentary until you learn how to write and spell. If you can't tell the difference between your and you're, or there, their and they're. don't bother writing to the Vindy. Your semi-educated status is typical of products of Ohio's state education policy since the days of James Rhodes. In addition to the your/you're gaffe, you also are deficient in these regards: Arrogant has two r's, regardless has no 'u', grandeur is not the same as granduer, you should be full of embarrassment to use only one 's' in that word, and resturant has an 'a' in the middle.

Chaney graduates sad to see it all end

This action highlights the idiocy, and the petty politics which still rule the Mahoning Valley in general, and Youngstown in particular. Does anyone think that closure of Chaney in toto is not a virtual certainty now? Instead of building the new East High in a deteriorated, inaccessible neighborhood on the east Side, the district could have built a central high school near downtown., but, they didn't because of Black/White politics. The eventual closure of Chaney will accelerate flight to the suburbs. I would estimate that the population of Youngstown City in the 2020 census will be 50,000 or less, and not many of them will be middle class taxpayers.

Roethlisberger enjoying time in spotlight

Anybody who thinks that the prosecutor in Georgia wouldn't have given his right testicle to have sufficient evidence to indict and successfully prosecute Roethlisberger doesn't know much about ambitious lawyers. The conduct of the North Carolina prosecutor in the Duke Lacrosse Team case is a perfectly illustrative example of the depths to which over-weaning ambition can drive a man. Successful prosecution of a high profile public figure can change a person from being merely a county prosecutor in a backwoods Georgia town into a statewide political figure.

Crime fails to shake Glen residents’ resolve

Lots of luck selling any house in Boardman,, or anywhere else in Youngstown metro area in today's economy. I grew up in Forest Glen, and have lived there off and on for fifty years including the present time. It has always had problems with robberies because it has always been a place where affluent people live. E.g. in 1980 in broad daylight on a weekend afternoon a car occupied by black teenagers, stopped at my home on Overhill, a boy jumped out, grabbed my six year old son's Schwinn, and tried to throw it in the trunk. In 1965 my aunt came home to her house on Oak Knoll to find the kitchen door kicked in, and a white adult trying to cart Christmas presents away. In both cases, the criminals dropped their booty and escaped, and were never caught. And, if you live south of Matthews Road, a tip of my hat to the very funny radio ski "Tippy Wives," you're not immune. It was only a few months ago a drug dealer was shot in the 7400 block of Mill Creek Boulevard. Maybe the drug dealers are moving to south Boardman because they are afraid of break-ins, too.
