Volunteers toil to restore veteran’s N. Side house

Being one of the neighbors who helped Ric this weekend along with my wife and daughters, was a great feeling of helping someone. The point here should not be one of who is at fault, who was in the wrong, or who is not deserving of help. There are a lot of people out there who make mistakes, some people like to point out those mistakes and some people do what they can to help fix those mistakes
. I am happy that we were some of the latter. More people need to make the best of a bad situation than just complain about it for things to change. Life in Youngstown may not be perfect, for some of us it's not too bad, for some of us it's not too good but sometimes, like Saturday, it can be great. I just hope I can be a part of more of those days. Thanks to everyone who tried to make Ric's situation great!

Youngstown residents mobilize to make man’s gutted house a decent home

I am a lifetime resident of the Northside, 48 years, and am thrilled to see the generosity being shown to a complete stranger who is moving into our neighborhood under unfortunate circumstances. My wife and I are planning to be some of the many who will show up to help on Saturday. Connie is currently rehabbing a home next door to me and I cannot describe to you what a fantastic job she has done, our new neighbor is getting one hell of a contractor to help him out. I know this is an isolated case of kindness but hope that this leads to much more moving forward. I am also happy to see our other Youngstown Neighborhood groups getting involved. Being a part of the Wick Neighbors group I do not feel that there is enough attention to how much all of our other groups throughout Youngstown are interacting to do everything in their power to make Youngstown a great place to live.I also have worked with Vinylume over the years and would like to say thank you to Jack, Orlando and Jack Sr. for stepping up the plate with their generosity. Great job to all involved!

Wick Park a focus of Youngstown administration, groups

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i see a lot of people saying that money should be spent on demolitions, yet it seems some of the problems with the blight are that some of these "homes" are still owned by someone and if they do not get inspected, the owners fined or stripped of their ownership how can the city tear it down? Whereas the park is something the city owns that belongs to the community and contrary to many of these "negative posters" beliefs, is used by many "decent" people in this community, myself included. Granted I have a few vacant homes adjacent to mine that I would like to see eliminated but on the other side of the coin I have seen plenty taken care of already. I personally take care of a few lots adjacent to my house but have also seen far to many lots that are left just to collect garbage. I would definately rather spend time in at a beautiful Wick Park than staring at an unkept vacant lot. And for the posters that will look to find a racist statement in the garbage message i would like to inform them that to me most things they feel are a "racist" problem to me they are an "ignorance" problem and that my friends covers everyone.

Also Reality:

There are bad things happening everywhere. Not just here. Years from now I guess we can write the same things about Poland, Boardman, etc. when the depletion of jobs affects their communities and the blight and crime hit there.

Wick Park a focus of Youngstown administration, groups

I have been reading some of these posts and am becoming fairly discusted with some of the comments. I have lived on the Northside all my life, 48 years. I have only recently got involved with some of the neighborhood groups seeing some of the good things they are doing. I've seen the good times and bad because i have been here the whole time. Some of the good has not been great, some of the bad not atrociuos. I am insulted by all the people who must think we live in a war zone because we hear of a few bad things that have happened here. I guess all of the rest of you who continue to trash the northside live in OZ where there is no crime and everything is beautiful. You know what they say about those who live in glass houses. I extremely appreciate those out there who are doing everything in their power to help bring our communities back and am personnaly embarrased for not trying to do things myself to help. The way I see it is if you start with Wick Park maybe the surrounding areas will follow. There will always be those who want to help and those who want to bash. I would like to add myself to the list of those who want to help. The Northside is my home, always has been and probably always will be and i have always loved it here. For those of us who live here we will always wish for it to be made better. For those on the outside with your negative views of us keep on bashing, we live in the reality of what Youngstown is and hopefully can become.
