I have to respect the man for saying, "yes, I am guilty" as it shows that he accepts responsibility for his own actions. Too often, people plead innocent when guilty, hold out for a plea bargain deals, or blame other people for "letting" them drive drunk.
OY is part of never-ending "everything is broken" movement following Gene Sharp's how-to books on revolutions (From Dictatorship to Democracy, etc. if you care to google. Same books were printed in Arabic, etc. for Arab Spring uprisings, and Optor revolutionists from Serbia are now trainers for hire using these methods.) The thing is... they are not going away. They have an agenda... most of them do not know what it is yet because this method of revolution requires building up a huge following before revealing precisely what they want. RIght now, it is in the discontent stage. We are supposed to say yeah, I'm one of the 99% and join them.
I agree with our mayor - city ordinances must be upheld, free speech and assembly rights do NOT include the right to camp anywhere you darn well please. Okay, so OY is only a pretend occupy, ran like a union strike in shifts, so the tent was more storage shed than shelter, but with the ongoing nature of this movement, one tent will lead to 100 tents as time goes by, especially as other occupy locations forbid tents and protesters migrate to where they are allowed. This protest can go on for years!
I can see allowing a burn barrel in winters, with safety compliance, since it is ran like a union strike - but no tents or tons of junk. That blue tarp and all that crap up there is a horrid mess. Why not store all that crap at Pig Iron or Lemon Grove or even a van parked nearby? And why do they need chairs when they have already taken over the benches?
People are jumping on this bandwagon blind may be in for a rude awakening when the call for revolution isn't what they thought it would be... oh yeah, so we hear Main St concerns voiced by protesters, but there is also a dark side that echos communist ideas and the mask of the jokers face that some protesters wear, it stands for that Anonymous group and some say they are somehow involved in this Arab Spring meets American Autumn crap. Arab Spring tactics including Occupy protests are used to launch civil wars. Be very careful... it is foolish to align yourself with a "leaderless" group that has yet to define what it wants.
As one of the invisible people who depend on the WRTA bus system as my main source of transportation, I invite you to come downtown to the bus station. I hear that crowds of people gather up there about 10 after the hour several times a day just to wave at the drivers as those empty buses pull out.
Sorry for being sarcastic, but the buses I ride are rarely empty. I've been on the Market St bus when every seat was filled. Of course, it depends on the time of day as some people ride the bus to go to/from work or to go to places that keep normal business hours.
Public transportation plays a vital role in our economy as the ALEC controlled congress turns us into a third world nation. As wages drop to min. wage, many people will have to make harsh decisions - owning and operating a motor vehicle is equivalent to the cost of renting an apartment. Some people will not be able to afford both.
I'd love to move downtown, but I cannot afford Realty Towers and my income is too high to qualify for International Towers. I was walking around downtown today while waiting on the WRTA and I must say, the cityscape flower plantings beds and plenty of benches give a good vibe to the city.
Yeah, lilgandee points out something that most people do not realize... SSI is like welfare, SSDI is the social security disability that people who work pay into just in case they are disabled before retirement age. Still, it blows my mind that the people in her example can afford homes, new cars, and a house full of brand new stuff. I made 70K a year before I was disabled and straight up... I exhausted my savings and lost my home and everything between the medical bills and a year of no income before I was approved for SSDI and then I had to wait 2 years to be eligible for Medicare. I'm definately NOT living grand in a rinky dinky apt here on the South side of Youngstown. I could not afford a car if I were able to drive, but hey... I can pass a drug test. IMHO, there are some things that need fixed... I think medicare is being ripped off by medical providers and/or insurance companies providing Part C. One of the first things I noticed when my Medicare kicked in was a major jump in fees... I noticed because I paid cash for doc visits for 3 years. I was shocked. An ordinary doc visit should not cost almost $200. It kind of reminds me of those $200 hammers only this time, the product sold to the government is medical care.
