Do you agree with Gov. John Kasich’s plan to cut Ohio’s income tax and pay for it with new taxes on shale drilling?

It's not enough for the extraction of a one time resource that should benefit Ohioans, no matter what the drillers say. Neighboring states have higher severance taxes and Ohio should too. West Virginia's is 5.79%, Maryland's is 5.5%, Michigan, 5%. Pennsylvania has no severance tax, but an "impact fee." Texas has a 7.5% tax and Okalhoma's is 7%. A good case cannot be made that Ohio should accept less.

Intelligent use of part of the taxes should include a trust fund, like Alaska's Permanent Fund, and the fund proposed in West Virginia, a rainy day fund, used to diversify the economy and support citizens in various ways.

Republicans rally around Romney over Bain critics

The Capitalism Huckabee is talking about is not the same Capitalism I learned about in American Government class in high school, or what was that about?. They are not talking about a market economy under the rule of law. Their Capitalism now fully embraces a particular political party, their handmaidens you might say, and has become what's called, Crony Capitalism, a bastardization of government and business. Not formal Fascism, but a brass band marching down Main Street headed in that direction, but also pulled by excessive religionists trying to lead the parade down the path to theocracy. Which will triumph? The captains of industry seem to think either outcome is a good thing and have opened wide the floodgate of corporate money for the candidates. Hey, get used to it, that's the way it works, is their best argument, proving old Bob Dylan correct all those years ago, "Money doesn't talk, it screams."

Do you believe the U.S. will become involved in a war with Iran?

So, if they get the bomb, have they said they'll use it immediately on Israel? They presumably understand the idea of mutually assured destruction that has worked for other nuclear armed countries, like the U.S. and Soviets during the Cold War, as well as Pakistan and India today. Why wouldn't it work with Iran?

US overspending the peace dividend

This guy is on the Council of Foreign Relations? Not much of a Council. His article is riddled with mistakes and erroneous assumptions and a point of view which allows all of that. Slashing defense spending is a good thing. The strength of the country was always economic. The captains of industry have dismantled American industry and sold it for a profit. Lost jobs and ruined lives did not enter into their calculations. If you are unsure about this, ask Mitt.

As this article shows, what we have today is not working at all, so why not try something different? What's that quote about doing the same thing all the time and expecting different results? NoTraffickingWantedHere, Thanks, I'm not familiar with those studies, I'll look for them. I don't think that legalized prostitution would end child sex crimes and rape, as samlam suggests, but it seems reasonable to expect they would be lessened. Trafficking, like many illicit activities, might be ineradicable but we have to try, don't we?

Thanks for the correction Bob. If you knew that, why didn't you share that information in your first comment?

I guess we can't talk. What a crude and skewed interpretation of what I said. Discuss the idea, don't turn it nasty just because you don't like the idea.

DC Fracking Today | Oil industry exec rips conference as 'witch hunt'

How long will the waste remain toxic? Will it degrade into something harmless? Will it migrate in a thousand years? Ten thousand years? With luck, our progeny will be here then and they'll probably need clean water, etc.

Can we talk? Men's sex drive is greater than women's. This no-brainer is not acted upon, as it should be, for the benefit of society. The ancient Greeks discussed this in drama, and it remains true today, but such a basic difference between the sexes is not mentioned today or taken into account except by advertizing. Maybe it's time. Since before the ancient Greeks, sexually frustrated males have commonly caused trouble of various kinds, from incivility to worse. Society is better off if there is some working safety valve for that frustration. Sexual prostitution seen in that light might be something other than a moral failing. It could be seen as compassionate and intelligent. Legalizing and organizing such would tend to end sexual slavery as well.

Cordray is the right person for consumer protection job

Hardly a "wrong" to be equated with the serial obstructions of government functions perpetrated by Republicans, recess appointments are common in history and these are needed now by the country. It is his duty as President, even in the face of unfair criticism by political opponents, to see that the apparatus of government works as well as it can. That includes the National Labor Relations Board appointees as well as Mr. Cordray. Seems the only question is whether Congress was truly in session when the appointments were made, or was it farce in order to thwart the legal powers of a President they don't like. Let's hope the issue is soon in the courts.
