In all fairness to these workers even if they get the raise they will still be making less than Trumbull CSB and there's no cost of living difference there. And even if most homeowners aren't directly receiving their services they are still contributing to preventitive efforts. If these workers aren't out there doing their job, the tax bill will really skyrocket to pay for the increase of kids put in "the system"
From what earlier posts have stated, csb's money does not go into the general fund which is why they are upset and not able to run their own budget because the commissioners want to look good when something is in the public eye. They weren't worried about looking good when the passed other county raises under the table.
I took wakeup722's comment about the escalade to be more sarcastic and humorous than factual. And it seems like the only people on here who are speaking without knowing the facts are those attacking the csb workers and their raises.
I can only hope that the people on here get some facts about the CSB raises. First, CSB's fund is completely separate from the rest of the county, so why the commissioners control it is beyond me, they are not a part of the general fund. Their funding comes from the levy (real estate taxes), and the other 50 percent comes from the state and federal government. These raises were granted 3 years ago and money has been sitting in the bank doing nothing since. Giving CSB workers raises or not is not going to get more sheriffs hired, their money has nothing to do with each other. As far as the levy goes, voters were not duped because the money has been put away, and even if it wasn't 3% of the average $32,000 salary for 115 employees would be roughly $110,000 per year. The levy raises 1.75 million per year so basically over 99 percent of that levy money goes directly where voters wanted it to go. To the children. And CSB's levy has always been relatively small 0.85 mills unlike some other county agencies and schools. Why was there no uproar when other community agencies were given raises? Why is CSB the target, SPINDY? Taxpayers rest assure, there is at least one local agency being very responsible with your money, and now they are being punished for it. And I hope all having negative opinions on this matter are homeowners who are the only ones whose pockets hit with the levy, and the cost of giving these hardworking people a raise, I'm sure is less than a dollar. As far as the workers who average about a 50 hour week, but are paid no overtime, and cannot flex their time as they are directed to due to high work volume, they basically just take those other 10 hours in the rear. These people are committed to the kids and every day go to crackhouses begging parents to get treatment for their kids, take parents looking for jobs (if they are even motivated to do so), take them to counseling, all to try to make things better for the kids. They are exposed to very dangerous situations every day. Why don't some of you with these harsh opinions go put an application in at CSB?
It's this type of parenting that likely has a huge effect on why little Matthew here already has a long string of behavior problems. While the bus officials may not have handled the matter appropriately, they do have a very hard job to do in looking out for the safety of the rest of the children on the bus that could have potentially turned into a huge fight or riot on the bus. So how as a parent should you address the situation? I know go to the Media and make Matthew a celebrity and completely minimize his actions. I know he was wrong, BUT... Yeah, that will do it. RIGHT! If it were my son I would have taken any issues with the bus personnel privately to the school and make sure the focus stayed where it belonged. On the child who at 17 has clearly not learned that in the civilized world there are rules and laws to live by and calling the bus driver a B**** is probably not a good idea.
My sister is a social worker in a neighboring county. I cringe every time I think of her out there, but she has a great heart and tries her best to help people. She goes into crack houses begging parents to get treatment for the sake of their children. She has driven these people around looking for jobs, taking them to counseling, again all to try to make a better home life for these kids. She and the others do so much to try to help these lost souls get right. And Walter, the best point you have made is that law enforcement should be involved in some of this. But what are the social workers supposed to do? Call YPD and wait an hour or two to help look into a dangerous situation for a child? No, they just go into it trying their best to make things better for the kids. And I agree with so tired, it wasn't the best PR move, and I'm thankful I can do the math and see the big picture here that the levy truly had nothing to do with the raises which account for a TINY part of the levy.. I only hope others do, and the representation on this is a small percentage of the community's feelings as a whole.
"the board's county-wide 0.85 mill 5 year real estate tax levy which raises 1.75 million annually."
So, just bouncing off of walter_sobchak's estimation that this raise costs approximately $110,000 per year. hmmmm. so basically, that means that of the 1.75 million levy a little over ONE HALF OF ONE PERCENT actually goes towards these worker's raises..WOW. I'm kind of shocked by the public's response thinking the levy was all about giving these employees a raise because really it's only costing the average home owner about a quarter, if that, to give these people who seem to have a pretty difficult job to do a raise. And reading the articles that these raises were budgeted for and approved 3 years ago I would think people should be more supportive of these public employees. But then again, IGNORANCE IS BLISS.. Have a good day all:)
