State probe of school projects in Liberty needed for closure

I forgot to mention that this woman who everyone wants to protect later resigned in order to become the Director of Learn and Lead. How fishy is that when the whole reason the district even lost money to the vouchers was when EJ Blott's scores dropped under her leadership ? And was it even ethical for her husband to appoint her friend as Superintendent when he was on the Board? All of that mess manifested this one. The other Superintendent candidate would have fired vs promoted her, not creating a new administrative position for her and then still having to hire someone to replace her at the taxpayers expense.

State probe of school projects in Liberty needed for closure

Yes, I concur. I think the Board, however, has acted responsibly. They are not the targets here. Why weren't photos of the Treasurer, Tracy and former Principal-turned Curriculum Director Kathy Carlisle, who was conveniently promoted vs fired when Blott's scores fell into the toilet and who created the whole mess on the front page? This goes way back. Parents hated her so much they picketed the school but her husband was on the school board and protected her. He even orchestrated Mark Lucas becoming Superintendent as he knew Mark would protect his wife.Lets get to the root of the problem here. A Board Member even resigned over it because she knew the most qualified applicant who had the majority of support on the Board was passed over. Protecting Kathy Carlisle was the name of the game and Lucas would do it as she was an Assistant under him. Why did the Vindy protect her?

Despite cost, Hathorn defends academic-recovery plan

The new adults who have been appointed by The Kasich Administration would be wise to allow the progress to continue. Changing the plan mid-stream will only create upheaval and chaos. For once something is being implemented with fidelity. Give it a chance. Realize that Kasich and his appointees are not friends of public education, period. He wants to create more for- profit charter schools for his campaign contributors. The district just moved up a rating so something must be working. Heffner minimized it but should realize that all progress is incremental. So, new adults appointed, no upheaval please. Just because Kasich won Ohio doesn't mean there should be chaos created for children who are making progress. He and his appointees won't be here much longer....they have already done enough damage. Give the recovery plan time to work vs. changing plans again so soon. I agree with Hathorn 100%.

Kasich: Issue 2 helped with budget passage

Just read these posts to see how divisive an issue this is ..... Great leadership, Ka-sick. You've got the whole state fighting with each other and begrudging public employees of their worth. Real leadership. What a jerk. Can't wait for the election results to put him and the rest of the jealous haters who follow him in their place. No on Issue 2 will send more than 1 message to this pompous ass and the entire country. The far right has gone WAY too far this time. GOP Politicians who want re-elected will soon be distancing themselves from Ka-sick. Can't wait!

What’s next if SB 5 repeal is OK’d?

Whether GOP state leaders want to admit it or not, Kasich will have egg all over his face if this polling is correct as it will verify that his attack on public employees is out of sync with what his own constituents want and believe. He doesn't even realize that his right-wing antics are so far right that he is helping OBAMA win re-election in Ohio.

Parochial parents, city schools at odds over busing

The school district doesn't transport High School kids to its own high schools, do they? If not, they technically are not responsible for even reimbursing parochial school parents. Busing is expensive and takes away resources that could be impacting instruction for children. If parents want to send their kids to private schools let THEM worry about how to get them there. Busing should not be an entitlement.

Senate Bill 5/Issue 2: How did we get here?

Mauk is exactly right....this is a national tone, a national agenda. This is what the Republicans now stand for because they don't have the vision or fortitude to work on the real problems of generational poverty, a weak economy, and the lack of real jobs. They would rather privatize public ed and help the for-profit moguls line their pockets with taxpayers' dollars, forcing local districts to raise taxes to replace the revenue they siphoned off of school budgets. They are destroying public education and targetting the public employees and their services which we do not mind paying for.

Leaders bash bill to boost vouchers

The article left out two very important things....1) that there are several years of consistent data coming out of Washington which prove that vouchers have had NO impact whatsoever on student achievement, anywhere---Ohio included, and 2) given that, the only motive to advance this cause is for greedy, for-profit moguls who give alot of money to the Republican candidates to continue to line their pockets with taxpayers' money. All the other opportunities to make any have dried up in this economy. The sad thing is that people are not aware of this. They will now be making the public pay for private school tuition for people who have been paying for it themselves all along. What sense does that make when districts are already faced with declining revenue? Then they will have to go to the voters and increase taxes as the money will have to come from somewhere! The punishment doesnt fit the crime for achieving districts or struggling ones. Youngstown Schools are just moving out of Academic Emergency for the first time in years under new leadership and Kasich and the Republican administration want to pull the rug out from under them? I sure hope that there wont be educators and other public employees voting for idiots like them this time around, in Ohio or in Washington. This is a national anti- public education sentiment folks, a national agenda. They want everyone to think schools are not succeeding but get away with not supporting them. Senate Bill 5 was just the tip of the lceberg...

Schools work on bus route problems

Dr. Hathorn is right again. The district's priority should be the YCSD students and then charters. Bravo Dr. Hathorn!

YOUNGSTOWN SCHOOLS Hathorn ‘pulls plug’ on two principals

Last year when the consultant from Mosaica identified 3 principals as ineffective, all were caucasian. Everyone knew that these two were ineffective yet they WERE protected- Why? Because they were black and the consultant was black? Look back at the hiring process of Artemus Scissum and the decline of the building under his leadership. Ineffectiveness knows no color- thank you Dr. Hathorn!
