Gunman robs teen on North Side

The new statistics on crime are out and once again Youngstown has landed in the top five for murder rate. They are at number four following behind only New Orleans, Gary, Indiana, and Camden, NJ. Congratulations.

GM troubles produce worry in Valley

I have got to tell you that outside of Ohio and Michigan, the people of this country do not give a damn about GM, Ford, or Chrysler. After what was witnessed this past week in Washington I am not sure many in Ohio or Michigan care either. On the streets here I have heard nothing but disgust and disdain for the "Big Three", and it's a toss up as to whether the UAW or management has left the more bitter taste. As I write this thousands of people all over the country are writing (e-mailing) their congress person to tell them to just say NO to an auto bailout.
On another note, BKDAWG, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have to work at least until I am 66 and probably longer if I intend to eat while retired. I should not have to pay 4000 dollars more for a Pontiac because I need to pay healthcare FOREVER so someone can retire at 48. Time to join the real world for the UAW and Management.

Grump, I agree. Management and those ridiculous collective bargaining agreements must go. What poorly managed almost bankrupt industry will we bail out next? How about retail? How about construction or mining or transportation??? Where does it end? Sorry, sounds like a bad investment for my tax dollars.

FormerYoungstowner,
I too, am a former Youngstowner. I left the Valley because of the same reason most leave, more job opportunities elsewhere. I too, have a Master's degree and at one point did make less money than an unskilled autoworker. I have to admit that even at a lower salary and all the school loans I would still have chosen my job over a higher paying factory job. I cannot imagine anything more boring than working on an assembly line where it is hot, noisy, boring, monotonous,......it just sounds awful. As awful as it sounds, I still believe that the union and management have successfully worked together (not knowingly) to bring down the auto industry, the backbone of American manufacturing. What a sad time for America.

Unions were valuable at one time in this country but are no longer necessary and are actually a detriment to growth. There will be no growth in the state of Ohio or anywhere in the "rust belt" until the union mentality is gone. I have found that unions protect only two things and those are longevity and poor performance. That being said, I believe that as painful as it would be the best thing is to allow the automobile companies to file bankrupcy. This would give them the time to reorganize and to finally do something about those ridiculous collective bargaining agreements they are tied to. Is the fall of the American auto industry all due to the unions? No, it can be shared with years of very poor management with absolutely no vision or foresight.
