Hunger and cold drives the poor to desperation.
A young man is killed but there is no reason attack anyone on this matter. A dispute turns deadly but life goes on. Nothing can be done for the deceased and we should dwell on rehabilitating his killer. He too has a mother and we should be made aware of her concerns.
More new affordable public housing needs to be built. The poor in the city need a place to live where they can maintain their dignity and not be under the constant threat of eviction from slumlords. The new units built at Westlake Terrace are a showpiece for the city. The pride in Youngstown is being restored one housing unit at a time.
When you have no economic opportunities then you have limited choices. Only when economic opportunities become available will people truly have viable choices.
Blaming the victims is neither productive nor ethical.
The poor of Youngstown respond to poverty very well. They are no stranger to the chill and the darkness when services are cut off. This along with hunger is a constant reminder that their plight is ignored.
Abandoned houses decay and are torn down while many are without shelter. Life in the city goes on with few complaints.
