As a Police Officer for the City of Canfield back in the late 60's to the late 80's, I could never get a conviction in any of DWI or OVI cases in Mayor's Court.
They were always reduced to reckless operation or failure to control.
I always felt good about the arrest I did in the DWI cases and getting the driver off the streets. The Court failed the system.
I was born and raised on the Southside (Lakewood Ave).in the 40's & 50's. I had always enjoyed living in YTown. But in 1988, I had to move to Florida for health reason. I return to YTown twice a year for visits. I see some real problems every time I come. But I see a great downtown now. Not like it was when I was a child in the later 40,s but better than it was in the 70's & 90's.
Now when I return to YTown, I have to visit one of the greatest parks ever.
When I was hired as a firefighter in Boardman in 1963 we had only two firefighters at the #3 Station on Shields Rd and # 4 Station on South Ave. At times, I worked at the Shields Rd Station by myself.
At that time there was nothing south of the # 4 station, but look at but look at the growth in that area alone. I have to agree with Steve Hierro that 1 or 2 firefighters working # 3 and # 4 station was not enought back in in the late 60's it is not enought man power 45 years later.
As a Canfield Police Officer ( Retired) from 1968 to 1988, we have always been known for our strict speed enforcement as anyone knows that has lived in the City in the pass 41 years since I started.
The same street, especially Brookpark, South Briarcliff, Neff and Skyline drives, Callahan Road and Hilltop Boulevard, Fairgrounds Blvd and N Broad (RT 46) North from the Village Green to the city limits has always been a problem with speed.
All these streets has always been posted 25 MPH. So slow down and you won't get a ticket.
I now live in a Florida city and we have a very strick traffic enforcement.
I just wonder what has United Food and Commercial Workers done for their workers other then setting back and getting rich off the workers who has to pay dues. I lived in the Youngstown area for most of my life until I moved to Floida in 1988. Most of our Supermarkets are UNION free and I have found no problem with that. One can see what Unions have done for the Auto makers. (great job guys). I come to visit a friend in Hubbard twice a year and sorry to see that Nemenz IGA in Hubbard had closed. I plan to SHOP in any Nemenz Supermarket, I can find while on my next visit this Sept.

Reopening of Boardman stations sparks debate
