Most support moving Cardinal Mooney High School to suburb, survey finds

Football recruiting base must be drying up in Youngstown. I kid on that.

In all seriousness, will a move to the suburbs change the student population at Mooney? Will the majority of Youngstown kids now stay home and go to Ursuline instead of driving possibly 20-25 minutes to the southern part of Boardman or further south (as has been discussed as the location)?

Also, who is funding this new school? I know Mooney has some big donors, but it has to be close to $20 mil for this. And as a member of the diocese, I know we don't have the money to do this.

This move does make sense though for Mooney, based on where their kids come from. Although, I think it makes more sense to combine UHS/CMHS into one and maybe locate on the North End of Boardman or near YSU. But, what do I know. Irish and Cardinal alums can't have that. Football rivalries come first vs operating efficiency of the diocese.

Penguins must win finale to have any playoff hopes

Not sure why the Vindicator continues to give people the idea YSU may have a shot at the playoffs. NONE of the FCS publications/websites even mention YSU as having a remote shot of getting in with a win. A potential good season went down the drain in October this year.

Time to focus on what could be a good hoops season for the Penguins.

Bohren resigns, not ready to retire

I'd gladly welcome Bohren back to Boardman as an assistant coach. When he was at Boardman he instilled confidence in his teams that they were as good or better than ANYONE in the state. Boardman expected to beat anyone they played. I don't feel like that is the way the coaches are there now. They need that kind of attitude and confidence back in Boardman. That talent is still there, the drive/confidence to get there is not. Might be good to get that type of thinking back in Boardman.

Judge: Nick Bilas can continue playing football at Cardinal Mooney

Youngspartanrepulican needs to get a clue.

Mooney is not getting in. End of story. Mooney can't win a state title when they don't make the playoffs.

The transfer when things don't go your way mentality is what is ruining high school sports. Mooney can compete at the level they do ,as technically being an avg size school ,because they pick apart the top talent at the Youngstown city schools after 8th grade and take a few other kids from other local schools here and there.

When Howland, Boardman, Canfield and Poland , have the ability to have a "farm system" like that and 1/4 of their varsity roster or more comes from non-feeder schools, I'm sure their playoff success would improve. Not saying those schools have never got a sports transfer, but it's different getting 1 kid vs 5 or 6 each incoming class.

Let's also remember Poland does have a state title in the last 10-15 yrs, so to say they never go anywhere isn't true.

Funny, he left Poland to play football at Mooney and the Dogs likely will be playing in week 11 while the Cards sit at home. Grass isn't always greener I guess.

Group: Levy would keep district’s excellence

The other thing is while Boardman's teachers salaries are far from the lowest in the area they are not outrageous. On average they are lower than schools like Canfield, Poland, and Springfield and comparable to many others. The avg salary in the district has also leveled off lately showing under a 5% increase in the past 5 years. While most districts have shown avg salaries increase by 10% or more. Boardmans avg salaries puts them just outside the top third of districts statewide. I dont thinks that is unreasonable. their starting salaries fall right near the state avg too. You speak as though the district is way over paid and that's just not true.

Group: Levy would keep district’s excellence

I didn't say build the stadium through a levy. I'm just saying our community support sucks for private fundraising. And working together and moving forward have nothing to do with the school levy but more our lack of community support. Everyone wants only what's best for their particular group and nothing gets done.

Not sure why you need to make this into a republican - democrat thing, that's what's wrong with politics now. If you think the community doesn't need to work together to help improve facilities for schools and athletics , and we can rely on a few big money people to pay for everything , you are nuts and that's not the way things should be. Everyone needs to pitch in and help. That actually sounds more like Democrat thinking.

Not saying you aren't right on some things you say, but let's be real, teachers salaries aren't going backwards. So the only people who will get hurt are students if this doesn't pass. Look at Poland.

Group: Levy would keep district’s excellence

People around here are so cheap and negative all the time. I wish some of you would wake up, get your heads out of your behinds and look around at other schools around the state to see the facilities and other things these schools have compared to ours.

If Boardman doesn't pay their teachers a competitive wage/benefit package, you know what happens? They don't get the best teachers to apply or to stick around. When you don't have your pick of educators, odds are against you to provide the best education. The benefits package issue isn't a Boardman issue, it's a state-wide education issue. Boardman is the only one that loses if they are the only one that cuts their benefits, because they lose good teachers.

Boardman has been excellent recently despite having one of the area's and state's lowest spending per pupil. So, to say Boardman hasn't managed their money well is a lie. Also, look at the # of years they have got out of the school buildings in the district compared to most of the other schools, who just leach off the state to fund the majority of their new buildings.

Honestly, the district badly needs to build a new middle school(to replace the 100 year old Center MS) and make major improvements to all of the schools. But, unless the buildings caves in on the students, everyone around here is too negative to support a bond issue to upgrade facilties.

Seems like the majority of the locals don't want to pay for anything, but expect top-notch results. Like I said, wake up and get out of the Mahoning Valley for a change. See what the rest of the state has and then see if you think our schools are in great shape.

Same goes for our athletics. Everyone wants to complain how bad our football stadium is, but no one wants to put up their own private money for a new stadium. There's just very little community support around here and everyone is so negative. People need to stop being so negative and realize the only way we will move forward and succeed is to work together.

Boardman official: All trees must be replaced behind Sam's

More than replacing the trees, whoever is responsible for that fencing along 680 where the trees were needs to fix that. The fencing is all mangled and looks awful along 680 where the trees were removed.

Ya there are other issues in Boardman that need to be addressed, but would you suggest Boardman officials should do nothing about this? Some of you people just find a reason to complain about township officials any chance you get.

Boardman boosters plan new sports complex

eymer,

First off, I wouldn't put too much stock into some site we know nothing about to rank schools. They don't look like they take any kind of demographic differences into account just based strictly on the fact all the top schools are just really well off districts. Secondly, not sure where you pulled those rankings, but Boardman School District is ranked #64 on there. I still think Boardman, considering demographics and their impact on things like test scores, is as good as any in the valley. And it offers as much or more extracurricular wise. South Range and Western Reserve rate ahead of Boardman (and Poland), but you can't tell me they offer all the programs and extracurriculars that Boardman does. I'd rather my kid has the option to participate in those things than be limited on their choices because of a small enrollment.
