Jmag, I must have failed to state the obvious. The reason part-time faculty have been underpaid is precisely because they don't have union representation. I don't think any appeals to the BOT will secure any "merit based" raises for even a penny! And I'm quite confident the same appeal to the governor would fall on deaf ears. The decades-long stagnant wages that characterize PT faculty compensation would be what all public employees would have to look forward to if SB5 passes.
Finally, someone asks a relevant question. The part time faculty at YSU aren't unionized. How many years (decades) since part time faculty received a 1 CENT raise???
Unionsbuiltamerica, It is a free market in the sense that no one is forcing you to go to YSU. Don't like the tuition there? Go somewhere else where you will find a better deal. Can't afford it? Take out a loan or WORK HARDER. You are a closet communist asking others to sacrifice their salaries so you can afford an artificially deflated cost. If you want a house, is it right to demand construction workers work for minimum wage just so you can afford it? Maybe you should step up your game a bit and take some personal responsibility for your financial condition.
To all you young republicans that don't want their tuition to help pay for professor's salaries... put your money where your mouth is. If you can find a better education for a better price... please go there! Universities operate under the same free market principles you espouse. Your conservative principles should tell you that if you can't afford something, then maybe you should't ask others to sacrifice just so that you can get what you feel you're "entitled" to. That would be kinda...ahhh...what's the word..."socialist"?! Hypocrisy at its finest, no?
Candy, You may not be aware of this but I can assure you that there are ACE members who have volunteered for school recruitment drives showcasing our research labs and student opportunities. All unpaid, of course, on weekends. The are many other instances, but this will only fall on deaf ears. Candy, please don't pretend to know what ACE members earn or don't earn. The only clue you have is what you earn with your GED.
So Bertram, what does your headline have to do with anything? Again this moron is spewing his hatred of this valley's last great asset. Why isn't this imbecil cheering for YSU and Youngstown? The University has a new STEM college, designated Centers of Excellance, exciting research, etc... But maybe DeSozo wouldn't know about any of this because he wasn't invited along with Congressman Ryan and Chancellor Fingerhut to tour the research labs. Gee... I wonder why???? I'm not the only one who is sick and tired of reading this hater's vitriol. It's about time the people of Youngstown demand better reporting from the Vindicator. What we need in this town is people who love this valley, its people and its assets. If Youngstown and YSU suck so much, why don't you just go back to Afghanistan or wherever you come from and see how much better things are there.
If you think many Ace members don't have advanced degrees, you are just plain ignorant. If you also think that ACE members are only janitors, delivery guys, etc, you are publicly displaying your ignorance for all to see.
The vindicator has no shame! This people of this valley come from a hard working tradition that has valued traditional union principles for generations. Your sleezeball rag, on the other hand, has never missed an oportunity to denigrate the working people of this valley. This includes your own employees that were on strike and the good people of YSU. It is obvious that your hatred of YSU employees is based on your own corporate greed that places a premium on your own personal profit to the exclusion of your employees. You honestly think YSU employees get paid too much? Many people that work for ACE have advanced degrees that are put to use by the university, but aren't recognized when it comes to salaries. Additionally, many ACE members assist professors and graduate students in their research and publications. Ace members volunteer their time in recruiting efforts both on campus and off. The pride and effort of YSU employees, both union and non-union, goes well beyond their job descriptions and compensation. As far as demanding concessions from YSU employees... think about this for a minute. All students that come to YSU for an education hope to graduate someday and get a decent job, maybe even in the mahoning valley. Do you think your mentality should carry over to their jobs as well? Should all workers in Youngstown agree to wage cuts so that their product is more affordable to the good people of the valley? Do the parents of YSU students want their children to get jobs whereby they forego raises and benefits? Why doesn't the Vindicator lead by example? Why don't you (the infinately wise and generous editors of the Vindicator) show the citizens of Youngstown that you're willing to take major pay cuts so that the poor people of Youngstown can more easily afford your publication? You are indeed a private institution, but the hard working people of Youngstown are sick and tired of paying for the fancy suits and cars of over-paid blowhards that do nothing more than spew vitriol on the pages of their glorified rag. Put your money where your mouth is.
YSU prez mugs the faculty

Everyone recognizes GM’s importance to the area, but YSU employees get no respect
