No answer to terrible roads

Easy answer: raise the tax charged on gas drilling to equal that in other states. We'd have billions of dollars for roads and schools.
Don't give away something we finally have that somebody wants.

All 8 proposals for new Youngstown fire station will be tossed

Ya think they don't have a grip on real world costs? And why do away with a playground and ball field when there are plenty of empty homes that could be used instead, or a mostly unused field just blocks away. Planners!?!

Natural gas plant will go online by year's end in New Middletown

In reality, this is a boon to our area, but do not delude yourselves that this is part of us becoming energy independent form import oil. At present there are 18 new ports being constructed to export US "processed gas". All the while proclaiming how the "drill baby, drill" mentality is helping the US consumer. And what does our governor do, keep drilling taxes lower on the oil/gas producers...lower than they pay in the states they come from. Aside from jobs we do need, those taxes are the only true benefit we will ever realize from all this. When the roads are beat up, or spills occur, or a well fire...who will bear the costs for those? We will! Don't believe they will go elsewhere, the gas is here.

McDonald man asks: Is Lordstown ready if oil evacuation needed?

No one is ready for a well fire or blowout. As usual the taxpayer will be obligated to increase their taxes to provide protection while those reaping the profits get a tax break from our governor. We need to tax this industry in a similar manner as Texas. Did you know there is no state income tax in Texas due to taxes on the oil/gas? Maybe if we taxed the same, we'd find that solution to funding our schools by not having property taxes. Try that one on Governor.

Ohio can remain competitive despite severance tax

The governor is selling the citizens of Ohio down the river with his low level of severance tax. While the gas/oil industry will boo hoo, they well know that fortunes are to be made - regardless of the severance tax. If the State of Ohio doubles that tax, they will still drill. Know why? Cause the oil/gas is here. This isn't US Steel we're talking about, or General Motors. Can't move the oil to China....well, not until they take it from Ohio. And that is exactly what their plans are, just look at the pipelines going to 18 new ports to ship this gas to foreign markets and Canada. Drill Baby Drill has nothing to do with the US being energy independent. It's about the new age carpet baggers.

Proposal to block all injection wells in Youngstown could not be enforced

Why not ban injection wells statewide? Oh, I know the cost is a factor, but they should be made to make clean the messes they make - safely. Remember the mills and the rivers.
Besides, they could get huge tax breaks and create jobs. It would stop all the waste coming into Ohio from other states also. All we're doing is passing on the filth and cost to clean up to future generations.

Kenner ends 32-year career in Mahoning engineer's office

"...compensated upon retirement for almost 960 hours of unused sick time and for some 720 hours of unused vacation and five hours of unused personal leave."
With no malice to Ms. Kenner.....I don't think any employee should be compensated for not using available sick time. In many instances it causes a worse illness, and it spreads illness.
It's there to use IF needed. Whomever set this up did a disservice to the taxpayers.

Ex-Marine kills 2, self at NJ supermarket

Shamefully we ask the most out of the best of our society...then, we let them fend for themselves with their wounds, both mental and physical, incurred serving us. We do some for a few, but by not means do we fulfill all of our duties to those in need.
That failure lays at the feet of both parties, all citizens. Shame on us.

Ex-Mahoning engineer Lyden: I wasn’t treated fairly

No Mr. Lyden, we the taxpayers were not treated fairly! Bidding contractors were not treated fairly!
Your lovely wife was not treated fairly!

You, in my opinion, were given a chance to slink out of the picture, probably keeping a pension. That seems way too fair for my tastes. I'd suggest the rail, feathers and tar.
Oh .... try some cheese with that whine!

Group launches campaign for Boardman schools levy

Maybe it's time all of Ohio school districts look to more innovative ways to fund education. Consolidate to County school districts, funding with maybe a hybrid combination of sales and income tax. The new economy we have been left with may not sustain the old ways any longer. It is a terrible problem and there are no simple answers. Well, maybe there are....cut spending, live within your means. But who does that?
