The Mahoning Valley Wall of Honor is a portable memorial recognizing local service members killed in action during the Vietnam War and Iraq/Afghanistan wars. The name, year of birth and year of casualty is printed on a bronze plate to honor each soldier from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. It will be on display through Feb. 15 at the Niles S.C.O.P.E. Center, 14 E. State St. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Donations may be made at the visit so another wall can be built acknowledging local soldiers killed in action in the Korean War and World War II. American Legion Howland Post 700 is the sponsor.

At a recent meeting of Youngstown Rotary Club, Irwin Stovroff spoke of a new program, “Veterans Helping Heroes,” and introduced two of the dogs involved in the program, at left, Jenny, a therapy dog, and Cash, a service dog. Stovroff, a World War II Prisoner of War and recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, and his partner, Jerry Kramer, established the Florida-based program to aid veterans who have been severely wounded in the global war on terrorism. The program provides assistance dogs that have been especially trained to give veterans mobility, independence and companionship.
