We have to keep a line drawn somewhere with all of the negative implications from past interactions. Even if a teacher or coach are wonderful with the best intentions, something can be misconstrued. On top of that, we unfortunately have some that do not have good intentions.
Teachers should not be social "friends" of their students online or anywhere else. Being friendly and being friends are two different things. The roles of student as pupil and teacher as educator are distinct and define a specific relationship. A social friendship between either changes both those roles and the dynamics of the relationship they prescribe. There is nothing wrong with a teacher caring for or caring about the welfare or well being of his/her students. However, a teacher who cares is not the same as a teacher who is a friend. Students need teachers who want to be their teachers, not teachers who want to be their friends. Too many of today's young people have parents who want to be their friends, rather than be their parents. These children are being raised with very little discipline, sanctions or other behavior controls. As a result, they are growing up narcissitic, very much in love with themselves and believing that the rest of the world should be too. It's bad enough parents are raising their children to think along these lines. We don't need our teachers doing the same.

What kind of teachers and what kind of students? This poll is more than a little vague.
It will only invite problems as we have seen happen throughout the country.
Teachers doing this should be fired.... Stop trying to be buddies with your students---grown up already.
Same with PARENTS trying to be "friends" with their kids instead of being the parent!!!
