Absolutely. When I heard investors were considering adding a facility in the Mahoning Valley, I made it a point to tell my family that this location would be a prime location. I guess the investors agreed!
This is a tough one. I'm not completely sold on the idea that casinos deliver as much of a net gain as is advertised.
Sure, years ago, Las Vegas and Atlantic City did well, but that was during a time when there was little competition. Today, with growing competition, many casinos are struggling to make ends meet. There are casinos virtually everywhere you look now.
Add to that, the other problems that casinos bring, and I'm not yet convinced that this is a good thing.
That being said . . . if we are going to have casinos in Ohio, then the Austintown location is a good location. I go to a casino once or twice a year and would much rather lose my money locally.
Kasich's support of the casino raises another question in my mind. It was not too long ago that most conservatives were dead set against casinos. That seems to have changed dramatically. All you conservatives out there: Any idea where this change came from?
Quail, what city has the highest percentage of foreclosed houses? Las Vegas - something like 1 out of every 8 houses is foreclosed. Is there a lesson there?
Its too late. Ten years too late. We missed our window of opportunity. There are casino's popping up everywhere and race tracks will be getting slots. There is only so much disposable income available and as more and more casino's open up, each casino's share will be less.
Will hurt the local economy not help it. All the profits will go to a company NOT from here. Local bars and taverns will be hurt. The money that they say that they will raise for government will go to THE STATE to blow on pork!
The Quail, This has nothing to do with Kasich and his support for the casinos. The casinos were voted by the citizens of Ohio. This is about the relocation of an existing racetrack license to a Mahoning County property that the governor will permit to have video lottery terminals. This is the only way that the thoroughbred industry can survive in Ohio and he knows it. The Bowler
