You people who believe we should open up relations again are not using your brains.
That will be one more country with cheap labor, where several of our jobs will be sent in the future. Think about it.
It will be a big mistake if this is done. The Castros are licking their chops at the idea of this as we speak. They are laughing out loud as well.

If the Federal government takes my tax dollars from California and sends a portion to Mississippi or Alabama to elevate their standard of living is that socialism?

There is a big gap between conservatism and stagnation. Or at least there should be.

Socialism is not the transfer of tax dolars from one state to another. That is our current system of democracy. This is a necessary operation of our government. The problem is that the people making the decisions in D.C. are acting under agendas far removed from what's best for us. I digress.
Socialism is the step right before communism and right after capitalism. It is the stage where the people (meaning government in today's society) take ownership of all production and everyone moves closer to equal. Sounds great, except that our government is corrupt and the people in charge have other agendas as alluded to earlier. You bleeding hearts like socialism because, in theory, everyone is happy and at peace. You bleeding hearts also live in a place far removed from reality and your main defense to this is usually to to bring up things from the prior administration in defense of the current administration. This shows your general lack of intelligence or logic in thinking. Bobby hit Susy, but Jimmy hit Jennifer in 2004, so it's ok.
History will usually show the answers to many of our questions. If someone can describe a socialist empire that has excelled over time and did not see it citizens treated like slaves, please comment on that here. Remember, even though you bleeding hearts like to point out the negatives about our country because you are so enlightened and progressive, this is still the greatest country the world has ever known and it was created and sustained through a quasi free-market system listed under capitalism.
Conservatism is the more effective way to act on certain issues, much like liberalism is the more effective way to act on others. Some people can only see one way because they are simple.
My suggestion is that we take all the bleeding hearts and their mental illness, all the far right moral police and their mental illness, and let them have the state of California as their own. It is about time that state secede anyway. We'll see how you all turn out.
The answers for our country lie somewhere in the middle as they always have, although some people can only vote, or argue, or react in extremes, so generalities are used and ignorance is presented.
This internet thing has really allowed the masses to voice their opinions however, and I get a great picture of just how stupid most people are. Remember, you are never as smart as you think you are.

I remember America going to the other side of the world in the 60's and 70's to fight communist so we wouldn't have to fight them here. More than a million people lost their lives. More than 58,000 of them American. I don't even know what the dollar cost was but in the end we didn't succeed. So now it's 35 years later and I'm still waiting to see when communism will take over our country.

Clarkkent mentioned China, North Korea and Cuba. When Americans and the people of those countries are exposed to each others way of life and customs which group do you think are going to say sign me up? The more we interact with others around the world the more others will see that democracy is what gives all people a chance to fulfill their dreams. America might not be perfect and I've done a fair share of traveling to some great places but none of them compare to America. I'm confident that nobody is ready to give up our way of life. It's funny that China is mentioned and the next time people need to buy their next piece of junk they run off to WalMart.

I don't understand why anytime you disagree with some conservatives they have to resort to name calling and insinuate that your UN American or you would want to secede from America. I don't want that but believe me California would do very well on it's own.

To DoctorGonz and Cambridge:

Good posts...isn't California's population declining now? I've been there, and with the exception of Redding, I never want to go back.

I do not agree on opening up relations with Cuba unless they change their leadership so that displaced Cubans can return home and rebuild their country. This will happen. It may take another generation, but it will happen. The current leaders cling to the extremes of Communism to avoid being overrun by another revolution and losing their exclusive power and the richs it provides.

Cambridge, you mentioned that you are still waiting for Communism to take over this country. Well, if we hadn't fought Communism on the other side of the world years ago your wait may of been over years ago. I may be wrong but I am glad we errored on the safe side.

Was the way BHO interacted with the rest of the world recently a example of what you are referring to, bowing down to a Saudi king and telling the rest of world how pathetic we have been in the past? You know those world leaders love this chump!

When that same Saudi King came to America Bush made out with him.

Communism is the last thing I want for America. I was trying to make a point and may not have phrased my point properly. My bad on that.

Do you actually believe that killing more than a million Vietnamese, Cambodians and Laosens was necessary to keep the Vietnamese from coming to America and forcing us to live under Communism? I'm glad you at least admit it was an error.

The more we interact with these people the more they will see democracy is the way. They will embrace our way of life. You don't need to spread democracy with a gun. It would be obvious to anyone living in Cuba the advantages of democracy and our way of life. The more people in the world on that same page the better. This is an opinion poll. That's my opinion.

It's not about politics; it's about $$. It always is. Politics are just an excuse to give the appearance of doing something for a pet cause. Yeah!

Reality is more like this: The USA has no issue doing business with China. Last time I checked, they were a communist regime...
