Seems like a very nice lady, but that doesn't mean you earn my approval.
Everyone knows this was a political move to win Latino votes. It helped for a few days in the Rasmussen Daily Tracking Poll when the Index went out to +10, but today it fell to his worst of his entire time in office: 0.
34% of Americans Strongly Approve of Obama. 34% of Americans Strongly Disapprove of Obama.
She has made the statement that Latinas make better judges than white men at least eight times. Was she lying all those times, or does she believe in racial and gender superiority? Either way, she should not be a justice of the highest Court in the nation.
I would welcome a Latina, just not a rascist one.
And oh yeah, 2/3 of her decisions were deemed faulty by the US Supreme Court and overturned.
Of couse, she'll be approved by the Senate because the People's Republic of America now has what Youngstown has enjoyed for decades...one party rule.
It is easier to rule the unmotivated and uneducated, especially if they're dependent on the government.
The DNC strategy of expanding entitlements and government dependence has paid off. They now have a secured voting block that will ensure their power over the subjects of the People's Republc of America indefinitely (or at least as long as the PRA exists).
Once there was an America that understood the value of an ambitious and hard working citizenry. Our children and grandchildren will read about it like they would the Renaissance or Stone Age.
Judge Sotomayor has had 1.3% of her decisiions overturned. Of all her rulings only 5 have been heard by the Supreme Court. As to her statement that would indicate her ethnicity would influence her decision making we need only look at Judge Alito's words; "When looking at cases of descrimination..I only have to look back to my own family's treatment when it comes to ethnicity and religion." I believe he was a Bush appointment.
I do not yet have enough data to support Judge Sotomayor but I cannot allow the far left or far right to influence my thought process. The Limbaughs and Moores of the world make their money by creating controversy and driving wedges through distortion of the facts and outright lies. My sympathy to those that allow them to do their thinking for them.
There is no such thing as a neutral perspective. Everyone's race, gender, and background influence the way they interpret and perceive the world. But America's white, Western European ethnocentrism has recast that particular perspective as normative, which unfairly labels all other perspectives as non-normative.
Sotomayer's Hispanic heritage has no more or no less influence on her than Kennedy's or Ginsberg's, or Breyer's or Robert's whiteness has on them. However, white people often ignore the fact that not everyone shares the same life experiences, nor do we acknowledge the legitimacy of any other perspective, so when someone points out that their ethnicity allows them to look at things differently, we automatically assume that is a negative thing.
With any luck, Sotomayer's appointment will mark the beginning of a Court that more closely resembles the actual demographics of the country, rather than another arm of the Good ol' Boys network that has dominated U.S. for far too long.
C'mon ProMerkin, just say "Seig Heil!" and be done with it. No point in staying in the closet.
"Better" is a relative term. Please define what you mean by "better world." I most definitely can imagine a "much better world."
Great comments City_Dweller. I especially appreciate your opinions on our ethnocentricity. You hit the nail on the head. An Hispanic friend commented to me recently, "Stupid Americans, they don't know anything about anything except themselves." That's a sad commentary about an attitude that has us playing cultural catch-up with the rest of the world.
I love the fact that ProMerkin and his little buddies post what they post. Come election time those post will go along way in helping people decide who to vote for. Keep em coming.
As with everything else Hussein has been completely screwing up - now its a mad rush to confirm this Latino woman. Everything with Hussein is a rush.....he's a fraud and a disgrace to all the men and woman who have given their lives for the freedom of this country. He knows he will get caught eventually. I'm still praying, as the truth is just around the corner. WHERE'S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE....
Rock-et....Obama was born in Hawaii. Pretty much everyone but you and Sarah Palin know that's in the United States. Were you too in the same geography class?
Wow, talk about tunnel vision. We can't even begin to fathom what other cultures would have developed into if given the chance. They were massacred and slaughtered in the name of European superiority, yes, because guns were more powerful and Europeans couldn't wait to prove that power. People of other cultures were considered inhuman and soulless. Native Americans and Africans challenged everything 16th and 17th-century Western Europeans knew to be true about the human race, and we are still fighting to correct the consequences of that fear and hatred today.
But with regards to Sotomayer, the bottom line is Obama could have nominated Rush Limbaugh (heaven help us) and Republicans would still criticize the choice. It's the nature of the beast. Republicans will hate whoever a Democrat nominates, and vice versa. Dems were none too keen on either Alito or Roberts. But the court needs an even balance of liberal and conservative justices in order to function as it should. Having nine Scalias would be just as disastrous as having nine Ginsbergs. Sotomayer adds diversity and perspective to a court that is sorely lacking those qualities. And while some people don't value those qualities, many of us who don't fit into the white, male, middle-class, heterosexual, college-educated, suburban paradigm that dominates GOP and even "American" discourse hold diversity very dear. And that does not make our perspective inconsequential. But it is still wildly under-represented, and yes, working to change that is a big priority.
City Dweller- you sound like you should be writing for Keith Olberman, and I mean that with as much insult as is sounds like. You seem to think you understand the high courts but I do not believe you do, not to mention many of the other posters to this question. Everyone should try reading the actual Constitution itself before they configure mini diatribes about who should be on the Supreme Court. For those who do not know, the Constitution was written a long, long time ago and it isb the founding piece of legislation that inherently governs our country, which is the USA, or to most: the place where you sleep, work and drink starbucks in.
cambridge posted: I love the fact that ProMerkin and his little buddies post what they post. Come election time those post will go along way in helping people decide who to vote for. Keep em coming.
On a previous thread cambridge stated that people write in to the San Francisco Examiner BEGGING to have their taxes raised. No, the people that want taxes raised are those that either pay no taxes or get everything back at the end of the year. The same people that got stimulus checks and never paid any taxes.
These videos will explain the mentality of the Obama voters and why cambridge's words about the next election are probably true. Cambridge has not figured out that he needs to work hard and pay a lot of taxes , a lot of free loaders are depending on him!
Judge Sotomayor has a deep and varied record, is well respected, and seems to have what it takes to navigate within our legal system. I think she'd be an excellent choice for Supreme Court Justice.
It's a shame that the neo-cons spend so much time focusing on one remark she made some time ago. The good news is that that's all they've got on her. I think she'll be seated.
DoctorGonzo: I have read the Constitution and see nothing in City_Dweller's mini diatribe[sic] that contradicts it in any way. Could you please clarify?
Or perhaps your comments stem from the fact that you consider the document to be "legislation." Don't worry, we won't hold your arrogant, condescending attitude against you just because you got it wrong. We're used to it.
The Constitution is not legislation? Please explain how it is not legislation. Your line about "navigating within the legal system" itself shows that you do not understand the judical branch and its duties as assigned by the Constitution. You expect her to steer rather than interpret the law. That is not what the founders intended for that branch, that's what they wanted the legislature to do. The same group that helped write the Constitution. You want someone who represents society better? Then elect a better congress person or senator, that is where people who believe their background makes them full of empathy belong: not on the high court. Interpretting the law is not the same as creating it. It's OK, I am arrogant and condescending and you are weak and appeasing, to each their own.
I do NOT expect her to "steer rather than interpret the law." The role of a judge is to interpret, not steer. I said that she knows how to "navigate within the legal system." This means that she has experience and knows the system. Twisting my words makes you look foolish . . . you should refrain from doing so.
I do NOT want someone "who represents society better." I'm not sure where you came up with that gem. I don't care one whit whether she represents society. I do care that she inteprets the law in a fair, unbiased way.
Wrong on both counts my friend . . . care to try again? You're bound to get something right . . . sooner or later.
A question: Who have I advocated "appeasing?" I don't recall doing so. Or . . . could you be wrong yet again?
The more their values and views are expressed the less any candidate they endorse will be taken seriously. I can't wait for those 2012 Republican debates and primaries.
ProMerkin . . .Did you forget to take your medicine again!?!?
You'd better pace yourself . . . we're only six months into the Obama adminstration and you're already close to a heart attack! You've got another 7½ years to go for god's sake! Slow down man!
You're pretty good at compiling lists of names. I could do the same with a list of right wing lunatics, but I won't, because realize that it would be a waste of time.
You see . . . not all liberals even remotely resemble the people you list. Unfortunately, you will never understand that the vast majority of us are nothing like the stereotypes to which you try to assign us. We are normal, hard-working people . . . not the monsters you try to make us out to be.
And, similarly, not all neo-cons are like you, so what good would it do me to compile such a list? Most are good, decent people who happen to embrace a political philosophy different from mine. It's only the fanatics like you who put a bad face on the conservative movement.
Keep up the good work though . . . people like you will go a long way toward ensuring Obama's re-election. Simply put . . . I don't like you, but my party needs you. So, as you were soldier!
Actually I'm pretty familiar with the definition of propaganda. I'll try to stop throwing big words around when posting for your benefit though...I forgot that conservatives try to keep it monosyllabic (there I go again – sorry, that means "one-syllable").
You hate me cause you ain't me, pro. You'd love to be able to take things written here in stride but you just can't...they consume you. They don't consume me because everyone is entitled to an opinion, I understand and appreciate that; people like you despise this notion.
Perhaps you should try dabbling in pacifism...I, myself, once did so.
pro, I picture you pacing nervously around your mother's basement blurting out words like "socialist" and "Soros" (I don't know who that is, btw), frantically wondering why Rush won't take your call even though you told his intern that you were a "long-time listener, 500th time caller."
You need to relax, my friend; see a movie or something, I heard "W." was pretty good...
Sounds like I hit a nerve...I'll say it again, I don't know who this George person is. See, I get the feeling you're not a very good listener -- it has clearly proven a real barrier to knowledge.
You're a homeowner? In Canfield? That’s pretty impressive, right? Perhaps...until I recall that I too am a homeowner in what one could strongly argue is a more affluent area than Canfield very far away from the Youngstown area.
You’ve made me feel a whole lot better about my situation, pro; THANKS! Keep hanging out in the basement for a while and stay out of museums for a while, there’s a standing APB out for crazies.

ProMerkin....I thought you lived in a Red state. You must have gone nuts when Ohio turned blue. Put Obama over the top. Thanks for that.
And you earned everything you have? Now that's pretty impressive. The rest of us, you know the one's that don't agree with you, we got everything for free. We didn't work for a thing. Somebody just gave us everything we have. I'm going to have to just keep disagreeing with you, I wouldn't want all the free stuff to stop.
pro, thanks for the clarification(?)...but if I don't even know who he is how is he laughing at me? If I don't know who he is how am I falling into his trap? What is his trap?
On second thought things aren't all that much clearer...because you're a rambling, crazy person.
My compliments to cambridge, especially the merkin bit.
First of all I will never have more than I need, that's not what America is all about.
Secondly it would seem somewhat strange to open my home to the "less unfortunate," wouldn't it? Perhaps your manic/delusional/nonsensical whimsy got the better of you and you worded that improperly...though, perhaps not.
Third, I never said "superior," I said "more affluent." There is a difference -- a profound one, in fact.
Fourth, your wild and baseless claims about counterfeit money and modern Marxism further illustrate what was painfully obvious earlier in your chain of posts -- you are a crazy person. Crazy to the extent that I fully expect your next post to mention how you've invented a product called "seven minute abs."
This country is indeed a confusing place, this much we can agree upon. pro has presented literally no facts; I really haven't, either but acknowledge that freely rather than asserting otherwise.
What is truly fun is watching people confuse common sense for liberalism (I don't consider myself liberal or conservative, I didn't even voice an opinion on Judge S.) and confuse baseless opinion with fact (insistence on such things as the government minting counterfeit money with no proof...interesting "facts" to be certain). "Rich, white people" take heed -- someone in CANFIELD has you all figured out.
