Reasons for runningHaving served for two terms, I have a solid understanding of the school system, where we have been, where we are now, and our vision for the future. When I first took office in 2006, the schools were in fiscal emergency. The board of education, with the help of our administrators, staff, and community, were able to emerge from that fiscal emergency in 1 1/2 years. We have set a course for responsible spending and increased efficiency, while expanding the educational experience for our students. I want to continue that effort.
Priorities Continued fiscal responsibility
Increased curriculum offerings and educational opportunities
Expanded technology
STEM development
QualificationsThirty one years in education, my service on the state level Assessment in Arts Committee, my eight years on the board, and being a resident of Struthers for 42 years, have all prepared me for the tasks at hand, and those challenges we face in the future. I have also served in leadership capacities in Children International Summer Villages (Bd member), and the Mahoning Valley Teen Challenge (Bd member and President). I also think that being a pastor yields abilities that better enable me to listen to the voters, and act on their concerns. Early in my first term on the board, I authored the 20/20 Vision Initiative which was embraced by the other board members and administrators, and has served to expand our technology and educational goals, and establish such critical improvements as our Struthers Pre-School. 20/20 Vision is now the platform we are using for further educational development as we move ahead.
Positions on the issues I believe the state must take more responsibility in making decisions that hurt the local public schools. If they persist on this present course, they will further undermine the effectiveness of the local school districts. The state continues to demand more and more from the public schools while, at the same time, taking more and more funding away. We, as board members, must educate the public on these issues, because I believe a grass roots initiative is the only way Columbus will change its ways. In the face of all this, boards of education have the responsibility to face all of these challenges and continue to provide quality instruction, safety, welfare, and the nurturing of our students.
