|Reasons for running||I'm running for School Board to help turn around our struggling district's academic performance and secure a brighter future for our children and our city.|
|Priorities||- My chief priority is to work towards improving the academic performance of the district. As a teacher, one of the primary ways I help struggling students is by giving more of my time to help them understand the material. I'd like to see the amount of classroom hours in each school day increase as well as an extension of the school year to provide students with more instruction and one-on-one assistance to improve performance.|
- Increasing community involvement in education: I'd like to see the creation of a team of community educational liaisons that will work with existing community organizations, faith-based programs, etc. to connect with members of the community and address barriers to learning. Each neighborhood faces different challenges and each segment of the community experiences different barriers. There is a need for neighborhood based, culturally sensitive outreach to address the gaps in educational success.
- Retaining local control: The academic underperformance of our district is unacceptable. Nonetheless, stripping citizens of their democratic right to choose their representatives is not the answer. The state and the district need to work together to produce a genuine, credible educational plan that will resolve the district's academic problems.
|Qualifications||As a former high school teacher of remedial English, I am one of only a few candidates in this race with experience as a K-12 teacher. I also have experience as a college instructor, including managing an entire academic program (i.e. paralegal studies). My diverse teaching experience gives me insight into how struggling K-12 students learn as well as what happens when these students move on to college with the same educational barriers. Our district needs leaders who personally understand the challenges of education to help develop an effective strategy for turning around our low scores.|
My extensive legal background qualifies me to face the district’s present legal challenges, including the Youngstown Plan and the state government’s efforts to take control of the district.
|Positions on the issues||The Youngstown Plan - I oppose the Youngstown Plan in its efforts to take control of the district away from its elected representatives and ultimately appoint a CEO who is not required to have any experience or training in education. As the plan does not contain any specifics or features that aim to change the manner of education in the district, it is not a true plan for educational improvement. I encourage the state and local representatives to work together to produce a targeted academic plan for improving educational and career opportunities for our students.|
