East Liverpool, OH
Columbiana County Commissioner
I have proven myself to be qualified to pursue and deliver the resources we need to work together and get the job done. Having been on both sides of the table...from running businesses to working with the disadvantaged....I find we must replace the mind-set of spending for whatever “seems” right for today… Without thought of payback tomorrow. As a Business Administrator and head of a ministry that touched thousands of lives, I have learned - you can’t raise prices simply because you need money. Must look at the whole picture and make necessary and sometimes uncomfortable cuts. We must work towards the future because the process is sometimes long and tedious. If the ball is dropped today it will affect the next decade. I am running for the office of County Commissioner, because I believe that we need business minded leaders with a heart to serve. I have learned to do both....well.
I have been running businesses since 14 years old when my father and I put in a miniature golf course. I now own rental properties. Owned 3 stores - Salem, East Liverpool and Steubenville. Did it all - hired and fired, bookkeeping, cleaning and whatever needed done. While in retail worked with and was Co-Chair of the Tri-State Economic Development Group and was President of Calcutta Chamber of Commerce Secretary of Rotary Member of Salem, East Liverpool and Steubenville Chambers of Commerce President of East Liverpool Business Association Was one of the leaders who went to Washington and Columbus to talk with Congressmen, Senators, and the heads of the EPA, etc. We were successful in bringing to our county the Elkton Federal Prison and WTI. The Calcutta Expansion was “Done” 15 years ago (when heads of Communities and ODOT met) Tri-State EDGE - encouraged the Port Authority to hire Tracey Drake - what an asset he has been. Excellent job!!! I have also been in ministry these past 12 years. As founder of R.L.Burke Ministries, Inc., Faith Place (the Church) was established with an after school feeding program Senior Outreach - Store house -
Major issue must be infrastructure - the expansion of our water and sewage lines. Bert Dawsonv(our County Engineer) has been very successful in pursuing this expansion and as County Commissioner I would work with him to my greatest ability. Tap in fees are sometimes a hurdle for our citizens, so I would work to find grants to help the homeowners. We have been spending all kinds of money in this state to help people who are doing nothing. I think it’s time some of that money go for the improvement of our roads and our water and sewage lines. I am not suggesting that we cut off support to those who cannot make it due to disabilities, but we can no longer afford to reward laziness. There also must be a program to help transition those who are stuck on our welfare rolls into jobs that enable them to live freely and be productive. Senior property taxes must be lowered. As a pastor, my heart goes out to our seniors who have paid into the system for years and years who are now faced with the rising cost of heating fuel and medicine (let alone food). They are having to make choices between food and medicine.....between being warm and being full. As faithful citizens of our great nation, we must make a way for them to continue to succeed and keep their homes. We must look at whole pictures and make the necessary cuts. We must run the county as a business and quit raising taxes simply because that is what "government" does. Sometimes "government" is like the spoiled child who is having a fit because you refuse the second bowl of ice cream.....but as a good parent, you must use wisdom for your child's health. As citizens and as leaders, we must use wisdom for the health of our government.
Economic Development - I believe that we must make Ohio more friendly to not only the large businesses but also the small business. As a County Commissioner, I would be able to go into Columbus and talk with our legislators with a "louder" voice. We must try and make our leaders understand that we have been overburdened with taxes. Our farmers, our small businesses, our factories are not asking for a hand-out......they are simply saying ...enough is enough. We cannot succeed as a nation if we keep taxing those who are creating the jobs....those who are making it possible for your children and my children to find jobs right here in our counties. For economic development to exist we must create a business-friendly environment.
