Austintown Board of Education

Public service is a good thing. It is important to support and serve the community, helping children and young adults. Serving on the Austintown School Board will be rewarding experience of which I will be committed to do my best. Both my family and my wife's family have always supported, as well as served, the Austintown Schools whenever possible.
As a resident- I am a lifetime Austintown resident and have witnessed much of the growth in our community as well as our schools. As a parent- We are parents of three children David W. (FHS 1997), Katie (FHS 1998) and Daniel (FHS 2001) who attended our schools and then completed their college educations. During their years in our schools, our children were active in many sports (boys soccer, boys and girls basketball and track and girls golf) as well as marching and symphonic band and NHS. As parents we supported their involvement through attendance and participation whenever possible as members of PTA, soccer basketball and band boosters. As a family, we continue to attend and support many of these activities today. In our schools- As a strategic team member we were given the task to develop a plan to assess and meet our district's facility and land needs. This team met for 10 months (1999-2000) and played a role in the decisions to build the new Austintown Middle School. As a member of this team, I was proud to be invited to the AMS ground breaking ceremony. I have supported bond issues and renewal levees while serving on some of those committees. Completed Ohio School Boards pre-candidate workshop in Columbus on 07/25/2009. Completed Ohio Schools Board workshop for candidates at NEOUCOM in Rootstown on 09/21/2009. In our community- As a lifetime member of Austintown Community Church I have served many terms on the church board or consistory. As a consistory member one should have a working knowledge of meetings and committees as well as a knowledge of budgets, people skills, ability to make informed decisions, experience in hiring and evaluating. I have served many years as a youth baseball coach (6)and also basketball (2). I am a volunteer for the Salvation Army.
New School Bond Issue- Each of us need to make an informed decision and consider the advantages, potential operating cost savings to the taxpayers and the 21st century learning facilities it provides. Image and atmosphere- We need to move forward and promote a positive image, work towards what is best for our kids under the present economic conditions, while keeping the high ground. Necessary communication at all levels is not just desirable, it's of key importance.
We need to maintain the excellent rating earned by many of our schools and improve in those where needed to attain excellence. Our plan to attain this goal should be reviewed and revisited on a regular basis. As new school board members we need to be ready to approve solid recommendations from the administration, listen to new ideas and provide our input. We need to oversee the utilization of resources, progress monitor, and test as needed, but only as needed. All Austintown Public School employees provide service and support to its students, from the bus driver in the morning to the food service worker at noon to the custodian who switches the lights out in the evening. Everyone has a job to do. However, one classification spends the most face to face time with our students, the classroom teachers. We have an opportunity in our schools because of the relative young age of our staff, of which about 25% have less than five years, and about another 25% have less than 10 years in our schools make a difference for the future. We need to continue an already successful mentoring program and look forward as to how to provide additional support and coaching beyond the first year. Our new teachers are most often enthusiastic and standards trained. Now at the other end of service years we have about 17% of our teaching staff that have 25 years or more of service. How else can we combine their valuable talents with our newer staff to benefit the needs of our students? Further, let's review our hiring procedures to ensure we are always hiring the most competent new teachers. We should be ready to compete for this talent as our children need to compete in the world upon graduation. If we can make large gains sooner, with the help of families preparing their children to come to school ready to learn, and the community at large, we can provide a quality education and excellence in all our schools for years to come. To facilitate this excellence in all our schools in tough economic times we need to understand the continuing impact and provisions in HB1,school funding (evidence based) curriculum, and accountability. Hopefully this bill will be a step in making school funding systems constitutional. We are in tough economic times with a changing landscape that will require a sharp eye on the finances.
