Canfield, OH
Canfield Board of Education
None
To serve the students, teachers, staff and parents of the Canfield Local School District; to rely on my experiences as a parent, community leader and business owner to help guide the Canfield Schools and its students into and through the most recent educational mandates enacted by the Ohio Legislature; and to make sure that the "average" student has the same opportunities as the "honors" student to succeed in his/her educational experience while encouraging all students to achieve their personal goals of further education or entry into the work force.
Father of 8 children, 7 of whom graduated (or will graduate) from Canfield Schools; small business owner with diverse experience in all aspects of the operation of a company; 23 years in Rotary International which has allowed me to interact with people from around our world; religious education teacher; youth group leader; most recently attended the Governor's Institute on Creativity in Education; lifelong involvement in education and, in particular, Canfield Schools.
Major issues - funding of the schools and implementation of the Governor's budget/mandates for schools; working towards equating our educational system with those in Europe and the far East; evaluating local funding options; continuing to work within our budget; and providing creative opportunities for students to learn, especially those who may not be "traditional learners." My position is to continue to support Canfield Schools successful education record, to open greater communication with our legislators from the state and Congress regarding education; to increase open communication with teachers and staff to brainstorm new ways of teaching; to promote greater involvement of parents while listening to their ideas and concerns about our system.
My top priorities are to review how the Canfield Local School system supports staff and students in their desire to continue a successful learning environment, to research new opportunities to broaden a student's educational experience such as mentoring and increased job shadowing, and to work with the administration to continue its successful fiscal policies within our environment of ever-increasing costs. I will work towards the implementation of these priorities by researching and sharing successful educators' best practices, by listening to the administration, teachers and staff, students and parents who can identify concerns and areas that need to be improved, by inviting interested parties to a monthly "coffee clatch" designed to create an open and safe system for sharing new ideas, and to research innovative ideas for increasing the influx of monies to the schools, such as hiring a grant writer whose pay will be based on the successful receipt and implementation of grants.
