Canfield, OH
Canfield Board of Eucation
Canfield Board of Education Member 2006-present
As a current Board of Education Member, proactive parent and citizen I remain dedicated to working on state and federal levels to ensure the voices of Canfield Local School District are heard by the legislators who make decisions regarding school funding and education. I wish to continue my commitment to our youth, school district, and community ensuring we continue to bring additional value while maintaining the standards and expectations the people of Canfield expect from their school system.
As a Canfield Board of Education Member, I have been appointed and serve as a State Support Team Region 5 Board Member, an Ohio School Board Association Legislative Liaison, and a National School Board Association Federal Relations Network Member in Washington D.C. These roles along with my experience as Treasurer for Sturm Financial Services, Inc.; and past positions on many Canfield School Committees and Booster groups have provided me the knowledge and experience to continue to be an effective member of the Canfield Board of Education.
The State’s goal with the new school funding system (evidence-based model) passed in the recent legislation of House Bill 1, is to place a greater percentage of school funding on the state, in turn, reducing the amount paid by the property owner. Hopefully, the new model will offer more support than the past formula; however many state and federal unfunded mandates remain that negatively impact the Canfield Local School District. It is my position that legislators should avoid implementing statutes and rules that many times result in unfunded and underfunded mandates for districts similar to Canfield. I will continue to be proactive in lobbying our state and federal government to search for further solutions.
With the passage of House Bill 1 comes proactive and welcomed legislation such as the creation of a residency program for pre-service teachers; however, it also appears it may fall short of providing the funding necessary to implement this and other new and exciting initiatives. Professional development is vital to both the new and veteran teacher if we are to see increased achievement for all students. Additionally, legislators along with the State Facilities Program should address the demands upon districts related to classroom facilities caused by legislative actions. I will continue independently and through my roles on state and national committees to meet and collaborate with key legislative leaders to seek further equitable and adequate funding for Canfield Schools.
