Poland Board of Education
To represent the community in a professional, truthful unbiased way, with no influence from special interest groups or groups with their own agenda. The Board needs to become more transparent, accountable and consistent in their actions and setting of policies; especially to the public that elects them. Continue the tradition of excellence of our school system by assuring we provide our children the finest curriculum and educators possible. This includes utilizing and exposing our children to state of the art technology as well as our science lab technology. All teachers should have a classroom to call their own. This is required to attract the finest educators and administrators for our children. We have the finest athletic facilities in the area; it's time to have the finest education facilities in the area. In all my years in Poland, I can not think of one student making a living playing athletics. Bring a more positive attitude to the Board that will transcend down to the administration and to the teachers. Teacher morale in particular at the high school is at an all time low. Advise the creation of an interactive web site for the Board of Education to help keep the public informed of all strategies and policies.
Lifelong Poland resident and Poland graduate who strongly believes in a high quality education. My success in life is solely attributable to a great high school education. Having three children in the school system I have high expectations for the district. As a small business owner I have the responsibility of being both the president and treasurer of my company. As such I am fiscally conservative but know I must have the right tools and knowledge to be successful. I have experience in dealing with salaries, benefits as well as all employee relationships. Having served as President of the Poland Community Baseball Association for 2 years (Oct-06-Oct-08), and serving on the All Sports Boosters for the last 3 years, I am comfortable working with a board and having to answer to the public.
School funding will continue to be on the forefront with Governor Strickland's reform plan, Ohio's evidenced-based model adopted as part of the 2010-2011 budget. His plan is founded on components that are proven to be critical for student success and reduces the over reliance on local property taxes to fund Ohio's public schools. At this time his plan is continuing to evolve and most school treasurers and superintendents are confused as to how this plan will affect their individual schools. It is my opinion that Poland Schools will not benefit fiscally from this plan and the School Board will have to become more creative in dealing with future funding cuts. Public relations with the voting public needs to be improved. Lines of communication must remain open especially in these financially uncertain times. School districts will continually be squeezed for funding and the public must be kept abreast of this as well as be allowed to give their input. A simple interactive web site would allow for this type of communication. At this time the Board of Education has no such web site.
Provide the public with a consistent set of strategies and policies that the Board will follow without the pressure from outside interest groups in the areas of Academics, Activities and Administration.
