Michael Ceci

From:

Liberty Township, OH

Office Sought:

Board of Education, Liberty Schools

Michael's reasons for seeking office:

The first reason I decided to run for the school board was choice. Four years ago I found that there were three seats available for the board and only three candidates to choose from. I firmly believe that our schools and the community will be best served by having choice in choosing the best candidates for such a responsible position. The second reason occurred in May 2009 when the district placed a new levy request on the ballot without mention of any actions taken to curtail spending. The final reason I decided to run was the poor outcome from the July 2009 performance audit completed by the Ohio Auditor and the distasteful attitude of the written response to that audit by the district, claiming that the recommendations made would make it difficult to pass any new levy.

Michael's qualifications:

I have over 15 years of experience in managing and preparing private and public budgets. Efficient in performance and process improvement evaluation. The past five years I have been employed by the Ohio Department of Taxation as a Tax Agent working directly with compliance, auditing, research, legal and filing issues associated with sales tax, income tax, commercial activity tax, corporate franchise tax, etc. Professional affiliations include membership in the Ohio City County Management Association and the American Society of Public Administration.

Where Michael stands on the issues:

The issue that the stakeholders of the Liberty Local School District face in the election for the 3 Board of Education members this November is unfortunately much larger than ones position concerning the need for a new tax levy. The uncertainty about the results that HB1 will have on all school districts in Ohio, from funding formulas to educational standard changes, not to mention the time frame estimates for implementation, makes this election that much more important. As such, the issue immediately facing our district is a need for professional leadership. In my opinion, this election is about finding the three candidates, that when combined with the two sitting board members, can provide that professional leadership and thereby shape the direction in which thoughtful, responsible and transparent future decisions can be made.

Michael's priorities if elected:

As a tax agent for the Ohio, I see first hand how the current economic conditions are hurting both businesses and individuals. The residents of Liberty Township are no different. We must be able to expect real long term cost savings measures to be taken by the district before any new levy will be passed. If elected, I will contribute my experience in budgeting and performance evaluation to assist in finding necessary solutions to the financial shortcomings. Also, I will strive to provide an outstanding educational experience to the students while providing the community with improved transparency in board actions. I will accomplish these goals by providing leadership in decision making and by respecting and managing the fragile dynamic that exists between the needs of our students, being respectful of our teachers and staff, and understanding the financial limitations of the community.
