Austintown Township, OH
Austintown Board of Education
Chair of Head Start Policy Council 05-07, Interim Chair 07-08. Head Start Rep. to MYCAP Board of Directors 05-08. Corresponding Secy. for Frank Ohl PTA & Historian for Watson's 08-09. Current 2nd VC
The time with the Head Start Policy Council and MYCAP Board has given me an understanding of how a board functions and what its responsibilities are. In recent years, I have had the opportunity to participate in many school functions, getting to know how our district works from the elementary level to the board level. I am very active in PTA and also Head Start. I am a patient person and get along well with others, even when we disagree. Currently, I am studying leadership and gaining knowledge of the qualities of a great leader. Putting others first and making sure there is room for the next person is important. Recently, I have served as production coordinator of the Passion Play at Highway Tabernacle, with my involvement dating back 10 years. This has required me to grow my "people skills" and also grow as a leader in general.
The issues that come to mind first are 1) the bond issue, 2) open enrollment and 3) the new evidence-based funding model. The deal we are getting from the state will not be available to us again. It's always hard to agree to give more in taxes, but I think everyone knows that we either take the "BOGO" deal or not long down the road, we will be paying the whole amount on our own. I am for the issue. I am a part of the committee to get the issue passed and I hope that we are able to get the information out to the residents in way that proves we are doing the right thing. We really can't afford to let the deal go. As far as open enrollment goes, at first I was not sure what to think. I knew we really didn't have room for any more kids anyway. The criteria that must be met to get into our district is not easily met by just anyone. The fact that our schools are, for the most part, full, also factors in. So, I don't think that it's going to hurt our system and I can live with it. Last but not least, the new Ohio Evidence-Based Model. I have spent some time reading up on it and instead of it getting more simple, I just have more doubts and questions. I will be continuing my study into this new funding system, because it will affect us directly in the 10-11 school years. The new "Value-Added" evaluations and the "Evidence" that the system is based on will be something new for everyone to get a grip on. There are some aspects of the HB1 (House Bill 1, Education Section) that we will have to meet, without any financial help from the state. Many are asking, "Where will that money come from?"
My first intention is to push for future parent involvement on our board. I believe that there should always be at least one parent, with a child enrolled in our district, on the board. I want to be a better liaison to the parents and community. My intention is to serve the residents, employees and students to the best of my ability. I hope to offer the perspective of a parent and the open mind of a person who cares about Austintown, not my own personal gain.
