Canfield, OH
Canfield Township Trustee
None
The citizens of Canfield Township have legitimate expectations that their Trustees will: 1. manage Township assets effectively and efficiently; 2. protect equally the interests of all Township stakeholders: homeowners, business owners, and Township employees; and 3. provide a clearly articulated vision for the future of Canfield Township. As Canfield Township Trustee, I will meet these expectations by focusing on the following activities: · Promoting investment in the township. · Expanding water and sewer service throughout the township. · Update the Canfield Township Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) and Vision for Growth. · Consider creating the position of Township Administrator. Certainly the job of a Trustee encompasses far more than just these issues, but addressing these will give Canfield a solid foundation from which to build. We need representatives who will take an active approach to the Township Trustee position. I will be that type of trustee for the people of Canfield Township.
Member, Canfield Joint Recreation Board, 1985-1988 Member, Canfield Township Zoning Commission, 1993-2008 2009 Graudate, Mahoning Valley Local Government Leadership Academy (Regional Chamber) Member, Executive Committee, Mahoning-Shenango Valley Advanced Manufacturing Initiative
The major issues in the race (and the township) all revolve around growth: (1) promoting growth (all zoning categories, but especially light industrial); and (2) controlling growth (residential and commercial). The Township Trustees must be more actively involved in securing commitments and funds from county, state and federal sources to provide/extend the necessary infrastructure that will allow light industrial development in appropriately zoned areas of the township. Additionally, an updated Comprehensive Land Use Plan and Concept for Growth is absolutely essential. Unabated, residential development will dilute the value of existing properties in the township; and absent the necessary water and sanitary sewer services, all development risks exhausting and/or polluting the critical water resources. The trustees must identify and promote development in areas of the township that are currently serviced by necessary infrastructure/services. Where infrastructure/services are not available, the development must be more closely controlled until such time that the services can be provided.
Update the Canfield Township Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) and Vision for Growth. My 15+ years on the Zoning Commission gave me an appreciation and understanding of the role that zoning plays in the development of a Township. However, a primary function of zoning is to implement the Land Use Plan developed by the elected representatives of the people - the Trustees. It has been 10 years since the Board of Township Trustees has updated the Canfield Township Comprehensive Land Use Plan/Concept for Growth. I will make that update a top priority. I will resurrect the Citizens CLUP Committee organized while I was a member of the Zoning Commission. By various means, the citizens of Canfield Township have strongly expressed their support for smart growth and a new direction in development planning, with greater emphasis on slowing growth rates and enhancing the quality of life. The revised Land Use Plan and attendant Concept for Growth that the Zoning Commission will undertake will be a community effort. This public process will clarify the direction that the township should take over the next 10 years; and the revised Land Use Plan and Concept for Growth will be the township’s framework for consistent decision-making during the period. If respected and followed, the plan will help balance the many needs and desires of the community, while protecting the resources that make Canfield Township an enjoyable place to live, to work and to visit.
