SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR The sixth annual Vision for Veterans 5K race took place May 17, leading runners through historical Harvey S. Firestone Park in Columbiana and into the surrounding neighborhood. Proceeds of the event are planned for a wheelchair ramp for a veteran in need. The top veteran winners are Ed Brainard of Campbell, left, who took third place with a time of 20:28:90; and James Frost of Ohio, who placed first with a time of 18:54:30. Not pictured is Thomas Macri of Edinburg, Pa., who came in second with a time of 19:53:40.

The association, founded in 1927 in Youngstown, awards scholarships annually. The proceeds were from the annual charity fashion show in February. Above, Dr. Thomas Albani Jr. is medical director of the clinic, and Michelle Duffett is president of the alliance. The clinic provides basic primary care for those without health insurance. The alliance is a group of physicians’ spouses who promote the goals of the local medical society.

Dave Childers sits on his bike with Smoochie, one of many rescued cats and kittens. Vendors who sell motorcycle-related items, pet-related items, crafts, art and more are needed. Vendors will pay $15 for each 10-by-10-foot space. Donations are being sought for new items and gift cards for gift baskets that will be raffled at the event. Three bands will perform, baskets will be auctioned, and there will be a 50-50 raffle. Food also will be available. The village was conceived by Columbiana Council of Forests and Parks and built in the 1960s. The history includes the period it represents, 1790 to 1830. The book includes both black and white and color views of the village and 300 pioneer and modern recipes. Included are recipes from noted local residents as well as some from first ladies Martha Washington and Michelle Obama, TV journalist Deborah Norville, and local TV and newspaper reporters. The book sells for $10, and is available when Pioneer Village is open for special events and weekends May 4 through mid-October. The girls learned about reducing, reusing and recycling over the past few months and have earned all the petals of their Daisy Flower Badge set. The birdhouses are made of recycled newsprint. They will be displayed today and tomorrow at Springtime in Columbiana for a contest.
