The Downtown Kiwanis Club honored the grand champion and runner-up of the 80th annual Vindicator Regional Spelling Bee with gift cards to Barnes & Noble bookstores at a May 17 luncheon at the downtown YMCA. Brad Harris, vice president of the Kiwanis Club, presented the runner-up, Tamsin Day, an eighth-grader at Willow Creek Learning Center in Boardman, with a $100 gift card. A $200 gift card went to the champion, Max Lee, an eighth-grader at Canfield Middle School. From left are Alan Day, Tamsin’s father; Tamsin; Harris; and Max and his mother, Linglan Liu Lee.

Two students from Struthers High School were among nearly 100 students who attended the Rotary District 66650 Youth Leadership Awards Conference in Howland the last weekend of February. The conference is a training program that deals with leadership, ethics, building self-confidence and self-esteem, elements of community and global citizenship. Students selected and sponsored this year by Struthers Rotary were Lindsey Opritza and Olivia Torisk. From left are Tom Baringer, Struthers Rotary president; Mary Ann Morell, vocational service co-chairwoman; Opritza; Dyana Davanzo, Interact Club adviser; Torisk; and Joe Nohra, Struthers schools superintendent. Students are chosen based on their leadership roles and participation in school and community activities.
