The Vision for Veterans 5K on May 17 in Columbiana included two events for children. The Toddler Trot was for ages 4 and under, and the Kids Fun Run featured ages 5 through 9. The top finishers in the Kids Fun Run are, from left, Owen Bacon, 6, who came in third with a time of 1:34.70; Samino Manson, 7, second place, whose time was 1:20.50; and Katie Jacobson, 9, who won first place with a time of 1:16.50. The top three finishers in both races received trophies, and all participants received ribbons and free ice cream from Columbiana Dairy Queen.

Humane Society of Columbiana County will open a new Animal Resource Complex in July inside the 6,000-square-foot former ReStore building at 721 E. Pidgeon Road in Salem. It will include a climate-controlled exercise area, private pet party location and a memorial wall for pets, and it will offer teaching resources for school-age children in pet care and interactive behavior. Volunteers are needed and there are opportunities for advertising and sponsorship.
