SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR The Vision for Veterans 5K on May 17 in Columbiana included two events for children. The Toddler Trot was for ages 4 and under, and the Kids Fun Run featured ages 5 through 9. The top finishers in the Kids Fun Run are, from left, Owen Bacon, 6, who came in third with a time of 1:34.70; Samino Manson, 7, second place, whose time was 1:20.50; and Katie Jacobson, 9, who won first place with a time of 1:16.50. The top three finishers in both races received trophies, and all participants received ribbons and free ice cream from Columbiana Dairy Queen.

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Humane Society of Columbiana County will open a new Animal Resource Complex in July inside the 6,000-square-foot former ReStore building at 721 E. Pidgeon Road in Salem. It will include a climate-controlled exercise area, private pet party location and a memorial wall for pets, and it will offer teaching resources for school-age children in pet care and interactive behavior. Volunteers are needed and there are opportunities for advertising and sponsorship. The Youngstown Phantoms selected 30 players for their protected list after a five-day tryout camp that concluded Monday. Many, including Josh Nenadal (19), above, and Luke Stork (27), bottom right, were members of this year’s team (37-27-0, 74 points) which finished in third place in INSIDE the USHL Eastern Conference.
