SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR: Students at St. Patrick School in Hubbard, a Lumen Christi school, recently had a holiday dress-down to benefit needy families. Students and staff members paid $1 or more to be able to dress casually for the day. The funds raised were donated to families in need this holiday season. Students have the dress-down days once each month to help charities and families in need. The children practiced for several weeks to memorize their lines and work on their acting skills to represent the true meaning of Christmas to those in attendance. Vocal Alliance Barbershop Quartet, a part of the Stephen Foster Chorus of Warren, provided musical entertainment and comedy for the Austintown Friends of the Library during its Dec. 21 Christmas party. Friends program chairman Doug Wilcox invited the group and a luncheon followed their performance. Hitting all the right notes were Jack Foley, left; John McCaughan, director of the chorus; Ray Pelyhes; and Jack Martin. The next meeting of the Austintown Friends will begin at 10 a.m. Jan. 27 with speaker Dr. Donna DiBlasio of the Youngstown Steel Museum. Guests are welcome.

Cub Scout Pack 114 and the Iron Order Motorcycle Club, Youngstown chapter, donated toys for the Mahoning County CASA/GAL program children. The Mahoning County CASA Program trains volunteers to speak up for abused and neglected children in juvenile court. The Wish Upon A Star gift-giving project, operated by the YWCA of Youngstown, has a goal to put smiles on the faces of homeless and low-income children that the Y programs serve. Individuals and community groups team up with the Y to gather new toys, books, games and clothing for distribution to children in need. Eighty-nine children in the YWCA Housing Program received gifts. The American Legion Lake Post 737 recently hosted a Toys-for-Tots event in the form of a special party. The Ladies Auxiliary volunteered for the day, preparing food and desserts in the kitchen. Different bands played hourly, spurring many in the crowd to dance. Door prizes, a 50-50 raffle and basket auction made for a lively atmosphere throughout the day. Sgt. Timothy Taylor and Pfc. Jachberg Strom attended the festivities. The Legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion, the Auxiliary and Legion Riders presented the Marines with a check for more than $1,200.

The Monday Musical Club plans another holiday collection to benefit the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley. The second concert of the 2013-2014 season, An evening with American Idol’s Casey Abrams and Lee DeWyze, is scheduled for 8 p.m. Dec. 21. Rescue Mission staffers and board members of the club will greet concert patrons and take the collection before the concert. All of Chaney’s STEM students participated in the Hour of Code program, which demonstrates what writing computer code is like. The Downtown Kiwanis Club met Nov. 15 and learned about the No Stone Unturned Foundation, established by the speaker and her husband. Dr. Melinda Wolford and Eric Wolford, Youngstown State University football coach, started the foundation after their son, Stone, was diagnosed at age 2 with cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. The foundation provides support for patients and families touched by CFC and other debilitating illnesses, raises awareness by providing information, and promotes aggressive research on ways to enhance their lives. Physicians and staff with Ankle & Foot Care Centers are teaming up with the Salvation Army to collect and distribute shoes to needy families this holiday season. From left are Geri DeCenso, Lisa Troutman and Amy Assion. The podiatry practice is asking shoppers to drop off shoes at collection stations at any of its 18 locations in the Mahoning Valley by Jan. 3. Shoes should be new or nearly new. Acceptable donations range from children’s sizes to adult, both men’s and women’s, and all types of shoes from athletic to dress to casual. Children’s boots are especially needed in winter. Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten in Canfield has begun a Caring is Sharing candy campaign. Two moms, Nicole Billack of Canfield and Kris Oddis of Boardman, came up with a way to give much of the extra candy in their homes to children in need. Sojourner House and the Juvenile Justice Center agreed to accept the surplus.
