The Pennsylvania State House of Representatives recently recognized New Castle’s Eintracht Maennerchor for its commitment to singing after a 30-minute concert by the group. The choir was founded in 1894 and is one of the nation’s oldest male singing groups. At a spring concert May 4 at the Eintracht Hall in New Castle, seven members will be awarded pins for 50 years of service with the group. A new report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has dramatically lowered estimates of how much of a potent greenhouse gas is being leaked by the natural-gas industry. The EPA now estimates that in 2011, the natural-gas industry released 10 percent less methane into the atmosphere than it did in 1990. The new figure comes after the EPA estimated last year that those methane emissions had risen about 15 percent since 1990.

Public sale hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 10 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11. Members preview sale will be 4 to 7 p.m. May 9 where members will receive a 15 percent discount. March for Meals is a national campaign initiated by Meals on Wheels Association of America during the month of March. It was recently celebrated when Trumbull County mayors, administrators and city officials participated in raising awareness of senior hunger in the Mayors for Meals Day. Members and advisers of Austintown Fitch Robotics Team visited Rotary Club of Austintown during a recent meeting. Eileen Yantes and Wesley Pringle demonstrated the 2013 robot, a Frisbee-tossing machine. It won awards at various competitions. The group had 27 participants this year. They have six weeks to build their entry. Worldwide there are 2,143 teams and the Austintown team shares and cooperates with teams from Warren, Girard and Canfield. The school provides a work space but the teams must raise funds to build the units. Flower Wagon Garden Club recently began its celebration of its 40th anniversary year with a meeting at the home of Barbara Banks. The club also has been a member of Garden Forum for 40 years. It was founded in 1973 and founding members are Banks, Judi Kotch and Connie Meek. The club has participated in planting the Poland “P” in flowers, landscaping at Struthers Library and highway planting on Water Street. The club also visited with residents of Blackburn Home and fashioned flowers for the residents of Glen Ellen. To mark the celebration, members received a stained-glass desk lamp, handcrafted by George Banks of Glass Gems. Isabel Seavey, a member of Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative’s Human Trafficking Core Team, recently spoke to members of the Velocity Youth Group of Full Covenant Tabernacle. She educated teens on the dangers of human trafficking and the signs that someone may be a perpetrator or a victim. Some of those participating were Lauren Carr, left, Justyce Guinn, Zachary Ramsey, Seavey, Brandon Laurenzi, Christian Guinn, Courtney Matthews, Alissia Brown, Janiera Brooks, Quin’yotae Brantley, Guinevere Greathouse and Zechariah Gerthung. The Links Inc. Youngstown Chapter sponsored a tour of the Butler Institute of American Art as the culmination of Black History Month. It featured the viewing of a portrait of the late Dr. Luther June Shipmon, father of Link president, Krishmu Shipmon. The work was done by Al Bright, the husband of Virginia Banks-Bright and brother-in-law of Glenda Newell Harris, Link national vice president. Other art by notables in Black History dated back to the Civil War era. The tour included Connecting Links, Heir-o-Links, friends of Links and Alumnae members. Alumna Link Joanne Blunt, docent of the museum,

Boardman Lions Club will extend its eyeglass collection effort through a partnership with the Lordstown General Motors Plant, placing five collection boxes inside through the efforts of United Auto Workers Local 1714 President Dave Green, also a Boardman Lion. The boxes are located at Lordstown’s main entrances and at the safety department. More than 1,750 pairs of glasses have been collected by the club since September to be redistributed through LensCrafters to those in need. Green, left, gave a tour of the plant to Lion members Betsy Koch, Henry Koch, Patti Shears, Terri Wilkes and Ron Paris.

Austintown Historical Society is sponsoring its 23rd Spring Tea on April 21 at the Strock Stone House, 7171 Mahoning Ave., Austintown. Enjoying a cup of tea while making plans are, from left,  Rae Jeanne Mollica, Marge Goldner and Joyce Pogany. Seatings will be at noon, 2 and 4 p.m., and the menu will include coffees and teas, finger sandwiches, scones, pastries and items of a traditional high tea. St. Michael Church sets benefit wine taste
Members of St. Michael Church Wine Taste Committee pose in front of the statue of the church’s patron saint as they prepare for the seventh annual St. Michael Church Family Life Center Benefit Wine Taste. Among  committee members are, from left, Chuck Wirtz, Mike Fagan, Jim and Maxine Gordon, Michelle Billy, Sharon Fischer, Mark Billy and Audrey and Mike Geskey. The event will take place at 7 p.m. April 19 in the Family Life Center, 300 N. Broad St., Canfield. Proceeds will help pay for the center’s mortgage. Tickets are $50 per person and are available from committee members or by calling the church office at 330-533-6839. Wines from northeast Ohio will be paired with food by The Embassy and parishioners Mike and Karen Naffah. There will be auction items and a raffle drawing. SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR
