Elizabeth Smart, ABC news commentator and advocate against child abduction, speaks at the Healthy Woman Expo and Dinner at the Mahoning Country Club in Girard. Youngstown Connection entertains Kiwanis in Boardman The Ohio District of Kiwanis International held the 95th annual statewide meeting at Holiday Inn in Boardman. Repairs to the Interstate 80 over U.S. Route 422 have caused traffi c delays in Girard. The project is part of an $18.5 million road improvement plan that has also repaved I-80 from Shady Road to state Route 11. The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center of Boardman raised more than $1,700 for Make A Wish Foundation through its 5K event Aug. 11 at the Kirk Road Bike Trail in Canfield. More than 100 participated in the 5K run, 2-mile walk and Kids Fun Run. The youngest was 21⁄2 years old and the oldest was 78. The overall men’s winner was Fletcher Dunham, 17, of Boardman; women’s winner was Heidi Hoffman, 14, of McDonald; Mason Janis, 6, of Canfield won the 3-7 division of Kids Fun Run; and Danielle Williams, 11, of Sandy Lake, Pa., won the age 8-13 division. Dr. Ted Suzelis, N.D., owner of the fitness center, and fitness trainer JoAnne Maloney organized the event. Co-sponsors were Healthy Treasures, Fitness with JoAnne, Massage Cafe, Arbonne, The Vindicator, Marucci Chiropractic Wellness Center, Spirit Fluid LLC, New Hope Imaging and Questar Inc. Other businesses donated gift baskets and gift certificates for the basket auction, and Massage Cafe gave complimentary massages to participants. The sixth annual Fall Market on the Green will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Chairwomen for this year are Cari Gulas, left, and Debbie Shattuck. There will be 135 vendors with merchandise ranging from crafts and antiques to seasonal decorations and fresh produce. Artwork by local artists will be available, and an area for games and entertainment will be provided for children. There also will be a 50-50 raffle. The vendors’ fees are used to fund three scholarships annually for Canfield High School graduates. Seniors may compete by writing an essay. Fifty percent of this year’s proceeds will be donated to the family of Jimmie Jarvis to help defray medical expenses as he recovers from a motorcycle accident.

Members of the Warren Junior Women’s League recently donated $4,000 to the Life Enriching Activities Program, known as LEAP, which provides monthly social activities for teens and young adults who have handicaps and disabilities. VINDICATOR FILE PHOTO...The Paramount Theater, downtown Youngstown, reopened in the former Liberty Theater in July 1929 when the city had a bustling downtown anchored by two major department stores, a host of other retail shops and several theaters. This 1956 line to get into the West Federal Street theater stretched around the corner past Fanny Farmer Candies onto Hazel Street. In the hey-dey of motion pictures, block-long queues were standard at all the downtown theaters most Saturdays and Sundays.
